Lost XP start up password (HELP)

trying to help out a neighbor, She's been using her laptop for sometime and since forgot her password to a desktop machine she wants to access. I have tried a few things from the net with no success. Any suggestions? She doesn't have the XP disc either, so I can't do a repair. will my OEM XP disc allow access or does it have to be the originally loaded disc to do a repair?
any suggestions appreciated

Burned this iso for someone but they found their password so I can't say how effective it is. Either way you can't lose to try it. Linux live cd should be able to see your files and then transfer them to an external if possible.

I dont know how to recover an xp password, but if you want to recover the files use barts pebuilder. It will boot from an image file and let u grab files over a network connection or using a thumb drive.

As long as it is a legit copy of XP, you could give the M$ 800 # a call and M$ could correct that over the phone in a couple minutes. M$ is usually good for things like this.

You never posted if you were able to get in or not. If not, here's another way in. So, the OS in win xp, right? Boot the desktop up into safemode (f8 while booting up) and log into the built-in Administrator account. This will get you to the right menu. Navigate using your Up arrow key; the mouse will not work here. Once in Safe Mode, you will see the normally hidden Administrator account. The default password is a blank.

Hitting Ctrl-Alt-Del twice at the Windows login will usually bring up the login window so you can login as Administrator.

Hiren's Boot CD has a few Password reset tools that work well.

I would hardly consider using a readily available tool for a password reset "hacking".

Ben, what's the story? Which method did you choose? And did everything work out? Inquiring minds want to know lol On a secondary note. This is a prime example of not backing up your shit in the first place, anything important should be backed up. BACK UP YOUR IMPORTANT SHIT. Sorry rant over

I was wondering if you could go to jail for doing this like that guy who got sentenced for hacking into his wife's email?
