Hi I would greatly appreciate this if someone knew how to fix this. I have two laptops and somehow the wifi stopped working on it. I fixed it by getting a pcmi card. Now the wifi has stopped working on my other laptop. Does anyone know why this happens and how I can fix it? And no it's not because the wifi button is pushed to off.

Is your wifi account encrypted? Did you try right clicking on the icon near the clock bottom right and scroll down to repair? Are you sure your not connected to some other network intstead of yours because the signal is stronger? On the one that isn't working, delete it and redo all of your account settings sometimes that helps.

Lazy man's fix ( I had this same problem with Vista , not again since I went to Windows 7 ) ... Use "system restore" and restore the system to the last date where you are sure it worked.

I went nuts with Vista doing that to me.. It would tell me that everything was fine but yet no internet connection.. Restored to an earlier date where it worked and it would run fine for a couple of months,, when it happened again, restore to a couple of days earlier and keep on going. That BS stopped once I went to 7

did you try turning off and on your wifi..

and making sure its connected to the right network..

no need to go out buying a pcmi card or doing a system restore.

enyaw: thanks for your help and I apologize for not writing back sooner as I was on a flight and busy with Christmas stuff.

Whosyodaddy: thanks a lot, that worked. Although I would still like to understand why f&*^ windows changes things on me without me doing it and how to put it back.

BillyBobBobbybob: the problem was not the physical button as I tried that; the wifi icon in the system tray would completely disappear so I couldn't even find a network. It's almost like something would disable the driver. But if I went into control panel it said all the drivers were working ok.

Anyways, "system restore" is the winner.

Merry Christmas everyone!

If your wifi icon dissapeared, and your wifi is built in, and when you check your control panel it still there.. then its a driver issue withe the built in wifi.

It happens allot that it will say everything is fine, and the icon "wont" show a red x as if it was disabled. Best thing is first, click on wifi in controll panel select disable, then repeat and click enable. If this still don't work, go to your laptops manifacture page and download the latest driver for your wifi. Chances are all the TCP/IP protocols are just buggered from a Microsoft security update.. happens allot.

Where is "wifi in the controll panel"? Are you talking about the device manager? I noticed after I ran a system restore that there are 2 drivers now (wireless network adapters) that were missing before. So, what happened was this: I was waiting for my flight in a cafe with a free hotspot and somehow it deleted my wireless drivers!! Unbelievable.

start > control panel > network connections

if it happens again, first thing do this.

Go to your Device manager and look for any yellow ? or ! under the network adapter drop-down.(+ sign)

If you see a unknown device, or unknown network adapter, its most likely the wifi driver is buggered. Usually can just right click the yellow ? or ! and select update driver and let it look for the driver automatically. If it doesn't work, just remove the old drivers from add remove programs in the control panel and re install it from the laptops manufactures website.

If the Device manager is OK, and you see the wifi adapter fine, go into the network connections in the control panel and see if its there, disable and re enable.
