We have almost completed the "Year of the Sequel".

The Matrix sequels were not received well.
Charlie's Angels, though critically it did well, it didn't hang around long.
X2 came and went with little more than a whisper.

So, how do we expect the third installment of the adventures of Frodo, Samwise, Aragon, Legolas and Gimmly to do?

Thoughts...

I'm going to try the marathon at the theatres on 16DEC03.

It includes the extended versions of one and two as well as the final chapter of the trilogy.

What's really bothering me is that Gandalf and Soromon will not continue with their battle.

Apparently there wasn't enough room in the final chapter for the battle and they're thinking of adding it to the dvd.

That alone is enough for me to not be too happy with the final chapter, but we shall see.

...Jackson would need something to extend the DVD when its ready to come out. That being said, I tend to trust his judgement if he says this would have slowed the movie too much.

Looking at the previous movies i have confidence that ROTK is going to be great since Jackson seems to know what he's doing. When i first heard that Saruman wasn't going to be in it i couldn't believe it but now i don't mind so much. It gives me something to look forward to in the extended version DVD.

The difference between this and other sequels is that it really isn't one. It is the same story, told in 3 installments. All were shot together whereas most sequels are a forced issue intended to capitalize on the success of the first. The first is a standalone and usually there wasn't enough material to warrant the story to continue. This story was too much for one film, and Jackson is a talented enough director to ensure that each finished product will keep you interested in what is to come the following year. I certainly enjoyed the first two and look forward to the finale.

in a house...somewhere....i think
Having read the books (all of em are great btw) I can't wait to see how they've ended this trilogy on screen. I agree with stiffler...this is not a sequel ..its the continuation of a great story and i'm looking foward to seeing it.

Isn’t the extended version of the first and second LOTR film is about 4 hours long each? The first 2 LOTR films would be close to 8 hours long. OMG, a marathon indeed.

The Paramount theatre downtown is running the marathon on Dec 16. Tickets cost $49.95 each, which works out to $16.65 per movie. I may be mistaken, but doesn't it cost less than $16.65 to see a movie these days?

Can't wait for the last part - this should be a classic. Now, there's one more thing to wish for - after Peter Jackson directs his version of King Kong, someone will entice him to do a film version of "the Hobbit".

I went to the first movie expecting to be horribly dissapointed since I loved the books as a kid. so far they've both blown my mind, so I can't wait for the third.

the hobby needs more capitalism
I heard a rumor and supposely it's been confirmed but a major character got removed.

I think it was that evil white wizard. If it is true, definately thumbs down.

Cheers,

...which is why some believe it wins the best picture Oscar this time out.

I agree. If the third lives up to the first two, and there is no reason to assume it won't, then it should be a lock for the Oscar. The flow so far has been fantastic, and I'm not usually into these types of films.

Someone called in to Howard Stern last week to say that they had downloaded it already and it's fantastic. Has any one else actually seen it yet?
