Arnie wins?

Proof, if we needed it, that Americans are just foolish, dumb, and far too fucking stupid to get ANYTHING right!

To elect a movie actor who's never been in a film that didn't go over budget, a goy (to quote Molly Ivins) who looks like a bunch of walnuts in a condom, and who's a sexist pig with Nazi overtones....ah, people in California deserve the guy.

Back to bed, and I'm pulling the sheets over my head.

It Was funny Grey Davis campaigns with Clinton ( accused of rape, sexual assault, etc) and he makes a big deal out of arnold grabbing some asses, give me a break. His buddies at the L.A. Times sat on the story until the last second, big backfire. The paper could endorse candidates, but when you start to basically work for a candidate your credibility is shot.

Someone once said of Americans: "how can a people who have accomplished so much allow themselves to be portrayed so badly"

Some people will interpret this election result as more proof of the American peoples' bottomless appetite for nonsense. When an electorate is so angry at an incumbent that they fail to distinguish between an actor's role and real life it says a lot about how dumbed-down they are.

I thnk you will see

a repeat of the low expectation of Ronald Regan with Arnold. Regan became a pivotal president in the US.

Arnold’s acceptance speech was very impressive - I think you discount him at your own peril.

while i don't deny that Arnie is intelligent, i think he will find that California's problems are beyond his simple solutions. once the victory glow wears off, he will find, just like Dalton, that actually governing is alot tougher than campaigning.

and it seems that Arnold is anti "Hollywood North".
He wants to set up grants, less taxes etc. to prevent US dollars being spent up here.
Many people in Canada, especially Vancouver will be without employment.
Over $50 billion is spent a year in producing movies etc. and less then $1 billion (of the 50) is spent in Canada.

Folks,

It is so funny to see people who know so little about US politics and nothing about California politics to posit so many useless comments. I'd rather think you'd be more concerned about why kittens are in hiding in fear of that reptillian kitten eater called Premier elect of Ontario.

I'm glad Arnold won. The Republicans can support this half wit sleaze bag and then shut the fuck up about Bill Clinton. This man will solve nothing. The fact is that the govenor has little leeway to resolve a deficit. 75-85% of state spending is mandated by constitution. I'd like to see anybody cure a 38 billion dollar deficit without raising taxes and cutting what little areas of spending that can be cut. And he won't be able to touch prop 13 without committing political suicide. And if you don't know what that is, you don't know enough to comment on the situation. To suggest that the LA times was in bed with the democrats when they let go of the groping charges, well let's just say I've come to expect those kinds of misinformed comments coming from this board. The democrats would have trotted this out a long time ago. The fact is that the Bay area voted 2:1 AGAINST a recall, whereas southern California voted 2:1 for the recall. To put it in terms you can understand, the data will show that the rich white counties of Southern California voted heavily in favor of the recall. Another interesting statistic about the California tax system...the rich pay a lower percentage of their income towards taxes than the middle class...only the San Jose Mercury News had the courage to print the real data. Republican drivel will tell you the rich pay the majority of taxes. The facts show they don't pay their fair share in this state. The Republicans aka reborn dixiecrats are so used of supporting legislation that required people to come through back doors, its no wonder they have become such masters at sneaking in themselves. Just as at a national level they made a cynical use of the impeachment process, they made a similar use of the recall provisions under California law. 2 million dollars put up by a convicted car thief and Issa went from stealing cars to stealing the democratic process. They bought an election for 2 million dollars and usurped the constitution and the entire vision of the framers of the constitution. Yet their real Republican in the race, McClintock, didn't stand a chance. The best they could do in a general election no more than 11 months ago was the half wit candidate named Bill Simon. He was handily defeated in a general election by the now recalled govenor. I don't want to hear anything from the reborn Dixiecrats from Georgia otherwise known as Republicans.

Yes, sports fans, I'd say sit back relax and enjoy this amusement ride, bound to me the envy of any Disney Corporation.

Well said!

One thing I do hand to Arnie though - he likely didn't do this for money (he could have just made T4 instead) and he likely didn't do this for fame (he could have just made T4 instead). So on the surface at least, it seems he ran for Governor because it's something he believes in.

Now, it's entirely possible that he's just using this as a stepping stone to the Presidency, but that's OK - you have to start somewhere right? In any case, he'll never make it there if he doesn't do at minimum a decent job in California.

So I say, congrats Ah-nold. Now let's kick back and see what he's really made of.

One more thing ...

CBC radio reported that Arnie spent $12 million of his own money on the campaign. While that probably isn't a lot for him, it's probably still significant enough to give him a moment of pause. I think it would be akin to one of us having to spend $10,000 on something. It's not enough to stop you from doing whatever it is you're going to do (if it's really that important to you), but it is enough to make you think it through.

To that end I say once again that he probably ran for the job because he really thought he could make a difference. Now let's see if he can do the job.

The good news is that you must be born in America to run for president. Thankfully, that is the one thing that Arnie can't make happen. Whew!

Agree with OTB...Both Reagan and GW Bush were underestimated. Arnold is supposedly much smarter and even more driven than he appears to us who only know him as an ex-bodybuilder, Conan, Terminator. Like "W", he's got a talented, experienced team of advisors. A monumental task to balance the budget...hopefully he can get the Dems to work w/him and cut spending.
EBS- LATimes went even farther(further?) than being in bed with Davis/Dems... they reached the point of actually campaigning for him.

I loved when Leno joked that she possesses "the only hole in the ballot that's already been punched." when he had her on his show.

hahahah, classic.
