I want to buy a remote starter as a gift.

Is there anywhere in Toronto, preferably Scarborough where I can get drive in and get the starter installed right away on a Saturday or Sunday?

Thanks in advance for the information.

You might be interested in knowing that I had a conversation today with a friend who owns a large garage, and he says that these after-market things are really a bad idea... and he sells them!

They fail often and when they do, the car can't be started until it's towed in to a garage.

I was just having snows put on, but my loaner car was one that the former owner had sold to him for $50 because it wouldn't start half the time and she just wanted rid of it. He ripped out the starter and it's been running ever since~

I disagree. I put one on one of my cars 5 years ago and have never had a problem. I did install it myself though.

If you have someone that is ignorant or sloppy play with your electrical system on your car you are asking for problems. I did not trust anyone to do it so I did it myself. It is not that hard either.

Here is the link to the brand that I used:

As long as you have the starter installed by someone who knows what he is doing (not the pimply faced kidnext door) you should have no problems. I have had after market starters on several cars, and given many as gifts (imho it is a great gift) and only problem was minor involving redoing the remote.

I am on my second one (second car, second remote starter) and I love them. However, there is one feature that I wish I had gotten no matter what the extra cost.

That is a feedback signal that the car started. Me and many co-workers start the car but they still go to a window where they can check that it actually started. Something that prevents this trip would be great.

And, the main reason for a non-start is not the remote. It is folks (including me) who push the starter button a second time because they are not sure if they did it the first time. Again, a feedback loop that it started would prevent this.

Have fun. Both my installs were by pros.

I love the feedback signal.

I had my last two car starters installed by Power Zone Sound and Security. The installer's name is Rasu and his number is 647-831-2009. He uses Compustar starter and not those cheap no name ones that crappy tire sells. If you call him let him know Mike with the Corrado sent you and he will take care of you. I believe he charges $200 installed but might be some extra if your car has an immobilizer.

That is because "most" people don't fork out the extra money to get the good branded remote start/alarm or just remote start kits

I've talked to people that go out and buy these Canadian tire brands and in the end they have so many problems with them, they end up paying for it in the long run.

I give 2 thumbs up for Compu Star only the 2 way alarm/starter kits. I have this on installed one of my cars and it work awesome for the winter time, and the range is amazing. One press of a button it starts the car perfectly and send info back to the remote and it shows you that the car has started and how long it will remain started for. All the programming can be done by the remote.

I would also recommend Viper or Clifford(DEI) products..

I would highly recommend the 2-way starter kit which does send the signal back to your remote once the car has started. And on another note, most newer vehicles have theft/security systems built in to the ignition cylinder and/or key so using the correct bypass module is extremely important. If not then you do risk the vehicle not starting at times with the remote and the key. Check out www.bypasskit.com to see which one applies to your vehicle. Hope this helps.

Canadian Tire had one on sale a couple (almost 3) years ago for $99 and the remote had a picture of the car on it. If the engine started successfully the car on the remote had puffs of smoke coming out the tailpipe. If you pressed the trunk open button the trunk lid would pop up. The doors would open if you hit the unlock button. I think the brand was Pro-Start or something similar, it has the feature your looking for.

I've had 2 after market remotes installed (including the one above) with no problems. One is going on 4 years, the other 3 years. I had a remote go bad on the older one, cost 50 to get it replaced.
