I have eczema, more severe on my hands. This time of year it gets worse due to the cold weather. Would appreciate any recommendations or remedies. Tried all the prescription stuff ie Lyderm etc. Would changing my diet help? Nothing seems to work.

thanks

I am assuming that you have seen a dermatologist and not just a regular GP? Also, it often takes a few different tries to arrive at an effective prescription.

I have had the damned affliction since I was born and be careful to heed the advice of snake charmers, the widow next door and anyone with doctor in front of their name. That being said you have dry eczema which is prevalent in the winter. Skin moisturizers are the best and while soaking in the tub is good for the cleanliness of the open wounds, be aware that hot water will dry it out. Myself, I have the wet version which occurs in the summer when the grass is out in seed and the wind born pollinators are at their zenith. After all the medical professionals had a go, the best cure still is to just scratch the damn stuff and hope your clothes come off without sticking to the affected areas.
They have made great advances in medicine but they are still in the dark ages on this one regardless of what the medical profession would have you believe. Good luck and you seriously have my deepest sympathies.

PS. I bet you are the first born child in your family!

Skin conditions are just horribly frustrating things. Because three different people with the exact same symptoms can have different root causes and triggers which all lead to the same outcome. Seasonal causes, dietary causes, hormonal issues, stress, environmental irritants ... it's jigsaw puzzle.

I tend to have dry skin and occasional eczema. For "general" use I find Lipikar Xerand works well. Other than that some of the creams with urea in them work for me sometimes as well as straight vitamin E cream.

For eczema my doctor prescribed a steroidal ointment that is effective for me.

Good luck!

Dovobet Ointment, which is a combination of Calcipot & Betameth DIP

I've had a problem with my fingers drying out during the winter, especially on the finger tips and along the inside where your knuckle is so every time you move your finger the skin cracks open like a paper cut. Used to uses Polysporan ointment until the doctor prescribed this. Now my hands are clearing up. No more cracks or build up of layers of dead dry skin.

Hydrocortisone Cream USP, 2.5%

I had it on my hands once - stress induced. The 1% didn't do anything, but once I upgraded to the 2.5% cream it went away in a week and never came back. Of course I manage stress better now, which is probably why it never comes back, but just saying the 2.5% cream worked really well for me.

I feel for you, dude. I've got it too, actually have had it for over 3 decades.

And I did it all
  • So-called "natural" remedies
  • Acupuncture
  • Acupressure
  • Hypnosis
  • Reiki healing
  • Changes in diet
  • I even went to a faith healer once (no joke, I really did)
The only thing - I mean the ONLY thing that's worked - are monstrously strong steroid creams and azathioprine which is an immune suppressant. Eczema and similar afflictions are your immune system going apeshit on your skin. Immune supressants work by knocking back your immune system a bit.

Gotta be careful with that stuff, though, for obvious reasons.

One last bit of advice, something I've learned in trying to manage this for 30+ years.

Most docs will start by prescribing the least concentration of the active ingredient, and work up to a stronger dose.

That does not work.

By prescribing, say, a Cortate cream with 0.25% steroid, that only gives your skin a chance to get used to the treatment, then the eczema comes back. Always. No exceptions.

I liken it to throwing cotton balls at an elephant.

Well, that doesn't work. You have basically got to send in the fucking Marines to wipe it out. You have to insist that your doc prescribe the strongest concentration that he/she (and you) are comfortable with.

One last thing: If you get the monstrous itching that comes with it, try running your hands under HOT HOT HOT water for a few moments. Yes, it hurts like hell scalding your skin like that, but it will knock the itch back for a few hours so you can get some sleep.

I have eczema as well. If you aren't already using this, I would recommend Aveeno with Oatmeal. It's a very good moisturizing lotion and reduce itchiness.

Also, I always wear gloves in winter time whenever I am outdoor. And I take fish oil (omega 3) to moisturize my body from the inside to the outside.

As for prescription drug, you just have to trust your doctor and becareful not to use too much because it would cause skin discoloration.

Agreed, the doc always wants to start with the weak concentrations first that don't work, and only after coming back do they give you the strong concentrations.

It's better than sex!!

I always loved the great medical advice . . . "Well don't itch it." The hot water feels incredible but the aftermath is 3rd degree burns and you still have the damn stuff. And for being the first born, there is a direct correlation to this point and the medical experts have found no cause.

- Growing up I was discriminated against because I had leprosy and this was from adults that should have known better.

- A doctor threatened my mother by reporting her to child services. He suggested that the diaper rash was caused by neglect.

- I got thrown out of school in grade three because I would remove my socks and shoes in class and itch the crap out of my feet. When the teacher told me to stop I told her to "fuck-off".

- I also tried the faith healer in the 60's by the name of Katherine Khulman, Felt the power of the Lord but I still had an itch I couldn't scratch and became a fucking atheist!

- I was raised on a farm and because of the severe allergies and eczema I would get repeated blood infections. At thirty-nine I had my first heart operation to replace a valve because of the exposure of the open sores to animal waste.

I have never mentioned any of this except to my closest friends. My first born has the same affliction but luckily grew out of it which saved me the guilt trip. I never have and while I can't wait for spring I dread the cutting of grass in June.

So if you ever see an old, fat white man sitting in the aisle of the Walmart and itching his feet, don't bother me cause I'll tell you to fuck-off and that the leprosy is contagious - run!

Hope this is not a silly question. Can you "catch" eczema by coming in contact with someone who already has eczema?
