I may have a job offer and was wondering if the adage, "Nice place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there," apply to Vegas?

ISO of advice.

Thanks

It depends on what you consider a life. I've spent a lot of time there in the past year on many extended business trips and have had a chance to explore Vegas beyond just the Strip (and its neighbouring suburb Henderson).

It appear that only lower-income casino workers live near the Strip. Everyone else seems to have fled to the edges of the city and Henderson. Once there, the residents live pretty much like anyone else in any N. American city. Most residents have told me that few wander into the Strip very often unless it's special night out to show visiting relatives or to catch a show. For gambling, most residents seem to head to the Station chain of casinos scattered throught the edge of the city - from what I hear, it's Strip quality excitement without the hype.

That's where being a resident in Vegas pays off. If you can prove you have a permanent Vegas address, entrance to golf courses and night clubs are generally much much cheaper. And, most musical acts on tour pass through Vegas as part of their tour. If you're at least in your 30s and have a hankering to catch your favourite 80's or early 90's band/singer, chances are they'll play in Vegas sooner or later. (I regret not seeing Billy Idol when he rolled through last year!)

The nearer to the Strip you get, the more you'll have to put up with traffic and generally bad driving. I attribute this to tourists gawking at the pretty lights and drunken driving. The two most often hear sounds in Vegas have to be the chimes of slot machines and ambulance sirens.

Feel free to PM me for anything more specific to Vegas life(style). Since you're posting this on TERB, you may be wondering about the SP/MP scene. All I can tell you is that from what I understand, SP's are overvalued - I've never visited any of the famous brothels - but I hear they're really really expensive. MP's tend to employ mainland Chinese women of varying attractiveness and will probably cost you USD120 for a good massage and release. I can't help you with taxation issues however. :)

Are there good restaurants, bars and shopping outside of the strip/tourist area? I would not want to drive to the strip very often as bad as the traffic was there this week.

I've only visted Vegas twice, but I would think that most of the town and immediate surroundings are innundated with things gambling. When I drove through the surrounding area there were still as many casinos as there were McDonald's.

Personally I'm really not into gambling so I wouldn't want to be in an environment where gambling is the #1 employer / tourist attraction / way of life. Having said that, people need to live their lives so ultimately Vegas would be just like any other North American city. You'll find your home improvement stores, fast food outlets, banks, car dealerships ...

An advantage is that you'd probably find cheap flights to most major American centres from Vegas if travelling is your thing.

You can never get away from gamling in Vegas. Most gas stations, drug stores, supermarkets I've walked into have slot machines or video poker lined up against one wall or another.

The quality of ammenities in suburban Vegas is equal to any of those found in other N. American cities. If you have a significant other who lives to shop, she'll love it there. The city has 2 large outlet shopping malls in addition to the many other malls scattered throughout the city.

I once bought a pair of Eddie Bauer corduroy pants for USD10 from the EB outlet store. You're probably rolling your eyes- corduroy?! Nothing like musical pants - zip zip zip zip...

Thanks for the tips all...I love it in T.O. Financial selfishness is the only reason I am considering persuing this job opportunity. I just want to make sure I know what I am getting into.

I love Las Vegas. I went one once in July, it was over 40 everyday. It would be near the top of my list of cities if I was going to relocate.
