Hello everyone,

This Humanitarian Cheetah Girl is so very emotionally touched by Live 8 happening today all around the world. Today I feel humanity's love and connection to each other more alive then ever.

WHAT LIVE 8 IS ABOUT

LIVE 8 is part of a day of action across the world which kick-starts The Long Walk to Justice that calls on the leaders of the world’s richest countries to act when they meet in Gleneagles on July 6th-9th.

On July 2nd in London, Edinburgh, Barrie, Philadelphia, Berlin, Paris and Rome millions will be coming together to call for complete debt cancellation, more and better aid and trade justice for the world’s poorest people.

LIVE 8 is calling for people across the world to unite in one call – in 2005 it is your voice we are after, not your money.

SIGN THE LIVE 8 LIST

http://www.live8live.com

Every single day, 30,000 children die, needlessly, of extreme poverty.
On July 6th, we finally have the opportunity to stop that shameful statistic.

8 world leaders, gathered in Scotland for the G8 summit, will be presented with a workable plan to double aid, drop the debt and make the trade laws fair.

If these 8 men agree, then we will become the generation that made poverty history.

But they'll only do it if enough people tell them to. That's why we're staging LIVE 8. 10 concerts, 100 artists, over a million spectators, 3 billion viewers, and 1 message...

To get those 8 men, in that 1 room, to stop 30,000 children dying every single day of extreme poverty.

We don't want your money - we want you!

All my love...
Your Cheetah Girl

Very noble sentiments indeed.

My opinion is that it can't hurt. I admire Bob Geldof and Bono for their conviction and tireless energy. Here it is, 20 years later and they are still out giving of themselves when other celebs hire minions to pick out the red smarties.

But realistically, I don't think anything is going to change in Africa any time soon unless there is fundamental change in the way their governments conduct themselves. And frankly, I don't know how that will ever happen.

We have poured billions upon billions into Africa and more people are dying than ever before.

Where did the money go?

Most of it went right into the swiss bank accounts of one war lord, or tin pot dictator or another. Even the money from the last Live AID 20 years ago went right into the coffers of the then war lord of Ethopia - Mengistu.

Mengistu used this influx of cash to help build up his war-machine, and they commandeered aid vehicles for their own purposes and, by diverting aid supplies, helped feed its armies.

It's a sobering thought to think that all the good will of 20 years ago did virtually nothing.

What are we (the mighty G8) going to do?

I don't have a clue and neither do Bush or Blair or any of the others.

One thing is for sure.

I agree with Paul Martin's stance 100%. If we have the dough, we'll help, if to the best of our abilities, but we aren't going to commit to a promise that we can't keep.

Way to go Paul

All of the above being said, if the African leaders would agree to let US, ie the G8 administer the aid to their countries, I would hole heartedly support doing exactly what Bono and Geldof want.

It's quite simple really.

Let Canadians, and Americans, Brits and Germans into your countries to run the aid programs free from any local government say so on virtually anything and we're good to go.

Only then would the aid really get to the people who need it.

If we just keep handing the dictators big bags of money, we are only making it worse by aiding them in their corruption.

I am less enthused about live8. As you indicate, what will really change? I do not believe in forgiving the debt... I am not sure it needs to be paid back... but I think forgoing it removes possible leverage. If I saw an effective program for real change... put the money where it belongs... enact enough education and cultural change that the Africans are neither so stupid nor selfish about sex/children... and actually do something that will make a difference. I do not think live8 will make any difference, and there was enough hyperbole around the original liveaid (i.e. we can forever end starvation in Africa) that they really have no credibility. Rock stars make very poor economists.

While I think the intent is admirable (I would like nothing more than real, effective spending for the planet and the people who need help), I do not think there is any basis in reality for forgiving the debt.

Sure have a free concert and everyone will come to watch it... but is this really going to change anything??? Will the G8 leaders care? Will Bush care? NO!

The Red Cross is in place in many of these desperate African countries and what they need most in MONEY! With money they can buy what’s needed to help and give it directly to these people...

It would have been much better if they had taken in donations during the concert. During the Live Aid concert in the 1980's I phone the number and made a donation... I would have gladly done the same this time but they said "We don't want your money... we want you" come on this is the most ridicules thing ever... Bono says on stage "there are people in Africa that need drugs but can't afford them"??? Um.... money would help that! I'm sure there are people working at the Red Cross that is just shaking there heads over this whole Live 8 concert... why didn't they help the Red Cross with Live 8? Making this into a political statement isn’t going to help anyone.

Annessa, thanks for posting, especially the line-up & songs. Already signed.
I'm disapointed with the promotion didn't seem to spell out all the performers.

The Canadian highlight imo was Niel Young performing Four Strong Winds.

The London act caught most of the attention given their line-up.

This would be the perfect use of the Carlsberg prize to fly around the world in private jet to catch differnt act in various cities in same day. Japan to start, Berlin, then Paris, London, Philly and Barrie. Ok, would need the retired Concorde to do it in a day.

James T, are you kidding with U.S. administer thats just like the Iraq war with their contractors funnelling all the $$$. Non-3rd world just syphon $ more elegently with better C.A., lawyers, etc.

I didn't sign the petition because I'm concerned the majority of aid isn't going where it should, instead maybe lining the pockets of dictators, and am not sure what impact increasing Canada's foreign aid will have at home. I agree with opening trade and wiping out their debts if they're not too large.

I applaud your sentiments annessa and your everlasting feelings of goodwill but imho throwing money at a problem doesn't solve a thing.

The children can't eat a dollar bill can they?

The only way (as I see it) to prevent the starvation/poverty that inflicts many countries is through education and population control. Way back in my school days we studied this problem extensively. The reason so many countries have this problem (and it is not only present in african nations) is supply and demand.

1) families in these starving nations have 3 - 5 children knowing that 3 out of the 5 will die of starvation/disease etc. the other 2 will probably grow up starving/malnurished etc. The familes HAVE the 3 - 5 children knowing that they will lose 3 of them.

2) the country's ability to produce food for the population. If the country's ability to multiply exceeds their ability to produce food, then starvation will always be present and will never change. Supplying food to these countries isn't the answer. Supplying the technology to enable the country to feed it's population is.

As for any nation (US etc) stepping in physically to aid these countries is ludicrous at best. Look what is happening in IRAQ? While Bush's motives there were more business driven on the surface he went in to get rid of a dictator who was murdering his own people. Now Bush and the US is involved up to their eyeballs and the world is pissing all over them for being there. Even a lot of the IRAQI people are against the US being there.

Just a head's up: This poverty/starvation will only get worse as our natural resources are consumed at an ever accelerating rate as our population grows exponentially. Sooner or later everyone will be in this boat unless we do something NOW not later.....

Added:

After reviewing the above I just wanted to add that I am not a cold hearted sob. I truly am sorry and feel bad that this has to occur.

With that being said I also want to add:

Does anyone else think that maybe this is mothernature's way of population control? Every other species on earth has built in controls that limit their population growth except we're removing all of our's lmost daily......

this event was about debt-relief NOT donations.

Some seem confused about how funds from this may be misused. There aren't funds from Live8.

Debt relief allows these countires to use thier own funds on more life sustaining and enriching pursuits than paying down old debt.

I think it's a good idea to focus on one solution and put efforts towards this.
Forgiving the debt amounts to billions of dollars available with the stroke of a pen, much easier and more beneficial than raising millions.
Africans are also concerned with the money going to kleptocracies, let's help them put pressure on their leaders to see the money is well spent.

They don't need your money, they need your voice.....

They can't afford the drugs in Africa because, corporate America has priced them out of reach of an average citizen. Large US pharmaceutical companies constantly use "our research and development costs force us to price our drugs in this manner". Bullshit, private insurance and meicare in the US and social healthcare pick up the large majority of prescriptions and costs of medicine in North America. It's all about greed once again....

As for the Red Cross, well, they themselves have admitted that almost 40% of their food aid and medical supplies are either diverted or just plain stolen. The G8 countries should run the aid program until such time that proper governence is in place in Africa......

And yes I am aware that it could be a long time for that to happen....

When did it become a political statement????

It's called doing the right thing....

debt relief is a loss of funds, and Boner wants Martin to donate a higher percent of our GDP to foreign aid. I think we should take care of our own citizens first.

Charity may begin at home, but why should it end there?
We need to realize that people are far worse off in other countries and it's up to everyone to help those less fortunate.
