In the laboratory.
Thanks Hamermill. Knoppix Linux is rather intriguing. The idea of being able to try it out without any alterations to the hard drive is a fine one.

I would like to get into Linux. What is the best way to get started on it.
I have a few older PC's (500Mz) unused with Windows98 on them, that I can dedicate to experiments with Linux.

PS: I am an old mainframer, using IBM computers since 1965 with MVS and UTS Unix.

What I plan to do, sometime in the future, is partition off my hard drive and install Linux on the new partition. That way you can run two OSs, Linux and Windows on the same PC. Figure this is the easiest way to learn Linux.

is missing from the list. It's suppose to be the easiest to install.

What's KNOPPIX?
It's a linux distribution that runs directly from the CD. It's used to try out linux and to fix things on a system that is unbootable because the software was screwed up some how.
