I went ahead and installed LINUX MINT 12 on the IBM Core 2 Duo server that was used in my neigbor's daughter's office. As a long time WINDOWS user, I find LINUX kind of weird.

What browser are you using?
Opera opens up 'png' and 'jpeg' files with no problems.

I think the default browser for Linux is FireFox. The core 2 is currently not connected to the Internet. I was taking screenshots of my own homemade videos and they were all png.

FireFox 11.0 should be the default Linux browser. I usually use Opera or Chrome.
It's strange FF doesn't open 'png' files which is mainly used in Linux.

Now that you mention png files, sometimes they are a pain and you need a browser to open them. To get around this I use 'gThumb Image Viewer' (available in the Ubuntu Software Center or Synaptic Package Manager) to convert png to jpegs.

I'm still very new to this Linux O/S. I notice that when I do a screenshot it is saved in png format, not sure if there is an option to change it to jpeg.

gThumb Image Viewer will convert it to jpeg.

gThumb Image Viewer is a small handy app and is available in the Ubuntu Software Center for free.
ALL Linux software is FREE....;)

Why do you "need" jpg?

Ok, will give it a try.

As a long time Windows user, I use Media Player Classic (apparently this is not available in Linux) to capture stills from a video.
I felt the same when first using Linux. It was so different and I was used to doing things the Windows way. However Linux has programs and apps that will do everything Windows does. It is just a matter of using them and they work fine. Some use WINE on Linux that lets you run Windows stuff on Linux but I never bothered with WINE preferring to break away from M$ completely. Now I am proud and glad to be M$ and Apple FREE and it didn't cost me a penny...

Mint 12 looks like a nice distro.
Mint is rated number 1 on http://distrowatch.com right now.
Haven't given Mint a spin yet but after viewing some of the clips and reviews, Mint look basically like another flavor of Ubuntu.

gThumb Image Viewer does a bunch or other stuff also. I use it to quickly re-size pics.

There are so many DVD players and so many formats out now that many don't handle all of them.
