Anyone have any comments about durability of LCD computer monitors?

A few friends have had their Dell and other flatscreens crash and burn at about 2 years of service. I was rather surprised. Is this typical?

Thx.

nope, it is not typical. I've got a number of LCD's in service, the oldest I've had for about 8 or 9 years and they still run just fine.

NEC, Viewsonic and LG all make fine LCD monitors. I cannot comment on dell LCD's due to not having any.

This is a pretty difficult question to answer in any meaningful way. The answer depends on the design, manufacture, and the usage scenario. The mean time between failure (MTBF) on most LCDs seems to be rated at 50,000 hours of operation, but things like temperature play a significant role in that. Anecdotal evidence suggests that the average LCD lasts for several years. I would say that about half of claimed LCD failures are actually failed backlights, which can be replaced by any decent DIYer. Then there are dead pixels, which are usually a manufacturing defect but can occur over time from abuse. As for Dell LCDs, as far as I know they're all Samsung LCDs, which are generally tops.

The LED's themselves probably are not failing as there are many other components in a monitor... such as a DC power supply, which have much shorter expected lifetimes than the LED's

LG monitor here, 4 yrs old,in use approx 5 hrs per day and never turned off, just goes into sleep mode, no problems, no burned pixels, no complaints,,,,,
as said above, the lcd screen is perhaps not failing, rather other components of the monitor,, ballast, power supplies, filters, capacitors etc.
