What are kids, parents and guidance councillors thinking of when pursuing education degrees? They're willing to spend tens of thousands of dollars and years studying for jobs only to wait decades to get a full-time job.

'The average wait time for someone to be hired as a full-time librarian with the Toronto Public Library is a decade — and that's for applicants who already have a foot in the door working other jobs at the library.'

I have an idea that adding qualified librarians would actually make Libraries more popular ...

The blame falls upon the student for being so niave, but also the system

We live in a get a degree society.

Public schools are geared towards university

University accept way too many students in fields with no employment. At least give the students warnings that they are getting in debt only to get entry level jobs.

Hillary Clinton is full of shit when she says university education needs to available for all and that all should get a useless degree.

But, you can become PM if you flunked out of engineering then got an arts degree instead

It's also the parents who are pushing the kids to go to university and paying handsomely for it too. The sad thing is that parents don't have a lot of workplace information available to them to make wise investment decisions. On the other hand, all you need to do is pay a bit of attention to news stories like this to know what is going on in the workplace.

People forget the post-secondary institutions like colleges / universities / technical schools are businesses too and simply don't care what happens to you after you graduate. Wish they would hammer that point home during high school.

in another thread about free university in Ontario, i asked what is the use of being educated in a university in order to be an informed citizen if you can't find a job to support yourself?

i still don't get a satisfactory answer

If people are willing to wait a decade in line for some government job, does it not say that the pay for the job is way too high?

I know some younger people now out of school, and their only real hope or dream of being in a job that pays well is to score a government job. Is a sad situation.

I think people have the impression that these jobs are safe and secure with a good pension. That may be the case now, but it won't last forever as the honey pots gets drained by retirees.
