legal question...sueing for back child support

I have a buddy who came to me today with a bizarre idea and I'm wondering if it can hold any water. He wants to sue his recently deceased fathers estate for back child support.

His Dad, though he was a minimal part of his life growing up did not pay any child support at all.He has said that his father would give a few dollars here and there but refused to pay anything court ordered. This was in the 70's and not sure what kind of weight court orders had compared to today.

Allegedly his father threatened death on his mother if she made any trouble(I do know she was physically abused my him during their marriage). He has said his father gave no money for school activities, extra curricular, food, shelter, and simply was not a part of life in anything but a negative way.

Does he have any grounds? The core of his issues comes from the fact that his father left a bulk of his estate to his common-law spouse and her daughter and very little to my buddys 2 siblings and him. He's in his late 30's now and I would not think he could lay claim to it now.Any thoughts?

I am sure he can find a bottom feeder to take the case and add mental anguish to the case.
