JFJ put together a team that was suppose to be sound defensively, as the expense of not getting any offensive help for Mats - but look at the numbers

1 BUFFALO* 26 20 4 2 42 113 81 9-2-2 11-2-0 6-3-1
2 ATLANTA* 28 17 7 4 38 96 79 8-4-1 9-3-3 5-4-1
3 NEW JERSEY* 25 14 9 2 30 62 66 9-1-1 5-8-1 5-4-1
4 MONTREAL 25 15 7 3 33 75 68 8-3-2 7-4-1 7-3-0
5 CAROLINA 28 15 10 3 33 93 88 8-4-1 7-6-2 6-4-0
6 TORONTO 28 13 10 5 31 91 92 6-6-2 7-4-3 3-5-2
7 NY RANGERS 26 13 9 4 30 84 80 5-4-3 8-5-1 4-3-3
8 NY ISLANDERS 25 13 9 3 29 72 67 7-4-2 6-5-1 6-3-1

9 OTTAWA 27 14 12 1 29 96 73 6-6-0 8-6-1 8-2-0
10 WASHINGTON 26 11 9 6 28 79 89 6-5-2 5-4-4 4-4-2
11 TAMPA BAY 27 13 12 2 28 85 87 7-7-0 6-5-2 4-5-1
12 BOSTON 24 12 10 2 26 68 83 7-5-1 5-5-1 7-3-0
13 PITTSBURGH 25 11 10 4 26 75 80 6-5-3 5-5-1 4-4-2
14 FLORIDA 28 8 15 5 21 69 96 6-7-1 2-8-4 2-7-1
15 PHILADELPHIA 27 8 15 4 20 68 102 3-7-4 5-8-0 5-3-2

92 fucking goals against!! only Florida and Philly are worse

way too much money tied up in a bad defense

Bryan McCabe Re-signed five-year deal worth $28.5 million $7.15 million
Pavel Kubina Signed four-year, $20 million deal $5 million
Tomas Kaberle $4.25 million
Hal Gill Signed three-year, $6.3 million deal $2.05 million

Isn't Peca suppose to be a defensive forward? JFJ should have traded for Toskalo (only making $1.2M) instead of Raycroft who is looking were ordinary

Mike Peca Signed one-year deal $2.5 million
Andrew Raycroft Signed three-year deal for $6 million after trade $1.8 million

I am happy with Kaberle, he is one of the best in the league. I can also live with Gill.

But Kabina should never have been aquired.. and McCabe never resigned. Their salaries should have gone into players like Havlet/Hossa. Form two potent scoring lines.
As it stands, who is Toronto's talent aside from Mats? ....
Tucker? ONeil? .. exactly. Even if Darcy is doing great *knock on wood* , he isn't a pure scorer.

Geez, hot women that know sports turn me on.......

AND......the Leaf defence is the most expensive in the league, and not as good as they should be for the money they make.

McCabe has the most accurate shot from the point in the league, he could put it into a coffee cup, but god, watching him in his own end makes me crazy. Sometimes I think they should sit him in a chair at centre ice and let him join the play when it gets there.

Kabby is great except when the going gets tough. Any playoff year the opposing team have forechecked his side of the ice and hammered the crap out of him. His game then disappears.

Kubina? jury out, but he is a demonstrated 45 - 50 point guy, and tough for a Czech. Gotta wait....he was injured, then his wife/gf had a baby thousands of miles away. That can take you off the game a bit.

Hal Gill is doing what they expected...big body in front, good pk, but they shouldnt have parted with more than 1.5 for him.

The kids are playing as expected, making mistakes and learning......

But is this group worth the money? Dunno unless they start to win some games all by themselves........

When was the last time Toronto even had one of the top ten defenseman in the league? Like back in the day with Salming (even that could be argued).

When was the last time Toronto finished in the top 5 in goals against? They talk about good defense for decades but I can't remember Toronto ever putting together an effective system.

When Toronto even drafts a good prospect for the defense they get so excited they rushed them along and ruin their careers for the most part.
