Laws Finally Targeting Johns....

A new law being brought into place later this year will make any man/woman who picks up a street prostitute with his/her car will face a MANDATORY one year drivers licence suspension. The "offender" will also receive an additional year for each conviction afterwards.

This was originally just for underage girls but had been amended to include all prostitutes, regardless of age.....I guess this will be a little more effective than "John School"

If the so-called offender was from a country other than Canada, the penalty would be what? I don't cruise the streets for this sort of thing but I think it would be amusing to be told I'll lose my canadian license for a year when I don't have one to begin with.

Don't many guys use cabs to cruise SWs? If so, these laws apply to the taxi drivers as well?

Is this a provincial or federal law?

Some provinces in Canada and some states in the US have agreements to provide mutual sharing of such information and the receiving jurisdiction may then take similar actions. Manitoba has a similar law I believe and that could be a problem at least for visiting Manitobans, that I know for sure. I believe that Michigan and Ontario also have an agreement, which was just recently reported.

I became aware of this some years ago when I had received a speeding ticket in Manitoba and several months later was notified by Queens Park that several demerit points had just been added to my Ontario drivers license.

Before you cruise maybe it would be wise to check to see if there is such an agreement between Ontario and your home jurisdiction..

I just read about this law in the SUn the other day and I personally feel that this is just a poor man's way of trying to make it difficult to pick up the street talent.

Tell me, what does sex and cars have to do with one another? Ok, well, there's the stereotype about auto erotica but I always thought that referred to a really sexy ferrari or MaClaren heheheh

Yet again our local government fails to realize that Toronto needs a red light district where those who want to partake of this sort of practise can go safely, securely and without recourse. Again, a red light district would allow the police force to monitor the age of the women, eliminate any problems with neighbourhoods complaining about the streetwalker problem and solve a lot of the issues about this business.

Pretty soon they will apply this "lose your licence" to other offences:

1) shoplifting: lose your licence for a year.
Logic: so you can't get to the stores to steal

2) drinking underage: 2 yrs suspension,
Logic: So you can't drive to the beer store to ask someone to get you the goods

3) Stalking: lose your licence for a year
Logic: so you can't get to your ex's abode (easily)

4) Littering: 6 months suspension Logic: so you can't get to the store to buy the stuff that came in the wrapper you dropped

5) Not Tipping your waiter(ess): 6 month suspension
Logic: if you can't afford to tip, you can't afford gas anyways!

6) late Return of Video Tape or Not rewinding: : 3 month suspension
Logic: you're a bad bad bad person!!!!

This goes right along with the law that revokes the licence of fathers who are deliquent in paying child support/alimony (which is BS).

Pretty soon what they will do is suspend your right to wear shoes so you can't WALK up to the streetwalkers (as least without looking rather silly!) LOL

Winnipeg Police impound the cars of johns who get caught in their sidewalk stings in the red light district. The johns have to attend "John School" to get their cars back, and it is the Province of Manitoba's intention to confiscate the vehicles of repeat offenders.

I'm not a lawyer, but I believe this is handled as a traffic offence, so as to keep it within Provincial, rather than Federal jurisdiction. It is likely there will be a Constitutional challenge of this law. I don't know what happens if the john is not the owner of the confiscated vehicle.

Well, from my travel experience, if its a rented car then the renter is responsible for all traffic or parking tickets so I would hazzard a guess to say that they would have to replace the value of the vehicle to the rental agency.

If its a borrowed vehicle then the driver would be responsible for the value of the vehicle.

I wonder if they thought of this while writing the law? I could see this getting really messy in the courts. The rightful owner of the vehicle, not committing any offence, getting punished. I could see that stepping all over our rights and charters. But then again, I could also see the courts (not rightly so) simply saying "the owner should be more careful about who he loans his vehicle out to"..... and we all know politcians and lawyers, its not about what's right, its about what they want to be "right"......

just another thought:

This would be similar to the photo radar law that they were using here in toronto: the owner of the vehicle got the ticket and the demerit points whether or not he was actually driving. Then it was up to him (or her) to proove otherwise.

SOunds kind of like "negative options" they tried with Pay TV: they automatically added services to your package and it was up to you to contact them to have them removed else you were liable for the charges.

I totally agree that the punishment for men using underage women (or men) should be severe, but when you use a baseball bat, to kill a fly, you tend to do more damage than is necessary.

When this law first went on the books the first guy to be caught was in fact from Calgary and was driving his ex wifes beaten up old pick up with a book value of about $800 i think he had a friend pick it up at auction for about $200 and he went public after it was all said and done. He said the BEST part was that his ex now refuses to speak to him.

This law is absurd I've never picked up a street walker, but had a long look at one today. Our society's view of sex is nuts.

I agree Ig, our views on sex are a little wacky, but have you ever watched a movie out of the US on TV? they edit out EVERYTHING but we let so much go....

Same as the SP business, if I am to understand it correctly, its not illegal for a woman to work in this business, but it IS illegal for a man to approach a woman in public, and it IS illegal to discuss money for this service, it is also illegal for anyone to live off the avails (but doesn't that mean the SP is living off the avails?), and you can't do incalls, but you can do outcalls.....I mean sheesh, like I have advocated in the past, they should just create a red light district and be done with it.

I don't know about any one else, but I think it would be rather cool to be able to go to a club/bar/establishment, check out the Ladies, then if there is someone there I find attractive, either take her upstairs or take her home.
