They got a stern warning? Fire the fuckers. I had to buy heavy duty suitcases, the broke 3-4 of mine.

Australian baggage handlers have been issued a stern warning by the CEO of a top national ground services provider after shocking footage of mishandling emerged online.

Qantas and Swissport Australia have launched an “urgent investigation” after employees were filmed slamming luggage onto a conveyor belt.

The footage, understood to have been filmed at Melbourne airport, shows three baggage handlers – who have been stood down pending investigation – throwing, kicking, and slamming passengers’ luggage onto a conveyor belt.

Some bags are thrown so hard that they fall off the other side of the belt.

One man is shown laughing while another man lifts a bag above his head, hurling it down towards the belt with force.

In another instance, one of the three handlers is shown throwing a bag a considerable distance down the line, despite the belt being right in front of him.

A Qantas spokesperson said the incident was “clearly not acceptable”, confirming an “urgent” probe was underway.

Qantas contracts Swissport for ground handling at the Melbourne Airport.

A spokesperson for Swissport said the workers involved had been stood down while they investigate what happened.

“Swissport trains and manages all staff to handle customer possessions with care and diligence,” they said.

“The actions of staff in the video appear to have contravened those service level standards.

“As a result, the staff in question have been stood down pending an urgent investigation.”

A staff note from Swissport Australia CEO Brad Moore, seen by news.com.au, warned staff of “serious disciplinary action” in the wake of Saturday morning’s revelation.

“It is with regret that I advise that evidence has emerged today of Swissport Staff handling customer luggage in an unacceptable manner,” Mr Moore wrote to staff.

“Our 3000 strong team across the network work hard to ensure these standards are upheld, and it is important that when those standards are breached by a small group of individuals that we take action.

“The behaviours in the video let all of us down – most importantly our frontline staff who have worked so hard through (Covid) to assure quality standards in at times challenging circumstances.

Mr Moore assured staff that those in breach of Swissport’s standards would be dealt with.

“Disrespectful behaviour to our customer luggage and personal effects will not be tolerated and will result in serious disciplinary action,” he said

“The individuals in the video have been stood down pending urgent investigation.”

“Since the video was released, I have received many messages from team members across the network, sharing these concerns and equally voicing their commitment to our Safety and Service standards. We cannot allow the actions of a very small minority to undermine the first class standards of the many.”

It comes after a turbulent year for the national air carrier, plagued by flight delays, cancellations and other high-profile incidents of baggage loss and mishandling, coming under the scrutiny of an ABC Four Corners investigation earlier this year.

People on social media were appalled when responding to the confronting footage.

“It’s sad, but I honestly don’t expect better from Qantas anymore,” one said.

“Is this like a competition who can destroy luggage the fastest?” another pondered.

“You got to be kidding me! Bet they would kick a stink if someone treated their stuff this way,” added another.

Don't even know why this is a story. It's been going on for years.
Other then the occasional purposeful slam, it seems routine to me. I would never expect them to just place them neatly on the conveyor. I wish they would but I don’t expect it.

This has been the case for a while now. Unfortunatelly, the work ethic has deteriorated even more since the pandemic.

This is why I do not place anything in my luggage that can break. I've always taken note of how a new piece of luggage after the first trip looks like it's been battered.

Looks like a tough job, I certainly would not want to do that.
I’m pretty sure this happens at almost every airport in the world almost every day.
Definitely a tough job. Breathing plane exhaust all day and night and dealing with constant noise in all weather conditions. Then loading each bag individually into the cramped cargo area on your hands and knees. It's the sadist's version of Tetris.

Traveling light FTW. Saves you so much time as you're not having to wait at baggage claim at the end of the flight. Problem is that the bins will be full if you board last. Then the agents ask you to check your bag anyway.
I always travel light because, I don't need the extra stuff.
One time I boarded last and there was no room. Except it was obvious there was no room because everyone else was allowed to go beyond their limit. If everyone else followed the rules, there would be plenty of room. I almost had to check my backpack but they finally found a spot. I figure let someone who brought in too much stuff check their shit. I brought in almost nothing.

Reminds me of many years ago, I went to Mexico for a highschool graduation trip and bought one of those very delicate bent glass bottles as a gift for my brother, who was a Corona fan.

I was an inexperienced traveler, maybe common sense is not my strong suit, and I had no idea how much abuse luggage goes through. So I just wrapped it in newspapers and put it in my checked bag. (Not even hard shell luggage, just a big duffle bag).

Somehow, I lucked out. It was in perfect condition when I got home. I remember how shocked my dad was that I decided to put it in my checked bag, and that it survived.

My brother absolutely loved it! But he was pretty buzzed that night, and he broke it by knocking it off the table about 5 minutes after I got home.

Had something similar happen to me on an AC Rouge flight. I boarded last and the bins were full. Luckily, the very last row was empty so they were able to wedge my bag in between the seat cushion and the seat in front. Was a bit of a pain to get it out and I also had to deplane last.
