And I mean geek in the most endearing way possible, honest!

I need a new laptop. Looking at the latest Acer models at BestBuy and Futureshop. Acer, for no real good reason other than I've tried all the rest and want to try something new that won't break the bank. I don't play video games, rarely watch videos (cough). This is primarily for work, so MS Office and blazing fast speed is really all I need. 14" because I need to carry it to client sites once in a while. When I'm at home, I'll have it connected to a second monitor, so screen size isn't an issue. Any thoughts on the following models from BB? The only features I know to pay attention to are the usual suspects: RAM, HDD, and processor speed, but what constitutes a material difference these days?

Why not an iPad Air or Surface 2 RT?

Both can run Office and MS OneDrive.

Personally, I think the MacBook Pro with Retina to be an ideal laptop. High res beautiful screen, fast SSD. The OS is quirky, but everyone who uses it and gets used to it say that it is stable and easy to use.
Between OP looking at Acer and wanting "something new that doesn't break the bank", I suspect the Retina MBP is out of his budget. But it is a beautiful device.

Check kijiji for an office model like an HP 8440/8460 usually like $300 used but better specs and quality and just upgrade to an SSD.

I just bought the top of the line 15" one of these, but as is said above, price is not for the faint of heart.

Some really good feedback here. I like the creating vs consuming analogy. I have a tablet already and that's exactly what I use it for. Surfing the web and creeping bikini pics on Facebook. I need an actual laptop for working in moderately complicated spreadsheets and basic docs, ppt and such. My track record with laptops is they typically last 3-4 years max. This is a company asset, so it's a write off anyways.

Thanks guys. I picked up the v7 yesterday. Haven't opened it up yet but will let you know. I should have mentioned there is no way I would go Mac. I hate apple, purely out of irrational spite.[/QUOTE]

There is a lot of that here, you're the only one to be honest about it.....

LOL

The resolution will suck for spreadsheets, but you will just plug into a monitor. The bilingual keyboard will suck if you are a touch typist. Hook an external for when you need to type like a demon. There are some tools that you can install to map that stupid \ key to left shift.

Pick up a spray wax can from Costco for the screen. It will keep the fingerprints down.
Yeah, I use an external monitor 90% of the time and I have a wireless keyboard just waiting to actually be used. Looks like the bilingual keyboard is a necessary evil unless you want to spend more, which I do not. Cautiously optimistic the v7 will do the trick. Still haven't turned it on yet :)

I thought that, too. But opted to say nothing until now.
