Woman caught jogging in the nude
By CARY CASTAGNA, POLICE REPORTER
She's Transcona's version of Lady Godiva.
But instead of riding bareback on a horse like the legendary tax protester of 11th-century England, this 40-year-old Transcona woman is often seen running stark naked near the Winnipeg Taxation Centre.
For at least the third time this year, cops arrested the nude nuisance yesterday afternoon as she jogged eastbound in her birthday suit along the sidewalk near Kildonan Place Shopping Centre.
"No runners, no nothing," Winnipeg police Sgt. Randy Clift told The Sun last night, adding officers covered her with a blanket and took her to Health Sciences Centre for a psychiatric evaluation. "Obviously, this lady is in need of medical care."
No charges will be laid against the naked runner, who was spotted by countless motorists along the busy thoroughfare.
Some of them -- including a nurse and a tow truck driver -- tried to help the woman, but she refused to stop until police arrived, Clift said.
NEAR WAL-MART
This summer, the same woman has been seen running nude near the Wal-Mart on Regent Avenue and across the street close to the Tax Centre on Reenders Drive.
According to popular legend, Lady Godiva of 11th-century England one day asked her husband -- Earl Leofric of Mercia -- to reduce the heavy tax burden he imposed on the peasant population as Lord of Coventry.
He agreed to cut taxes on one condition -- that she ride through town naked.
With her husband's permission and after warning the townspeople to look away, Lady Godiva rode naked through Coventry market only partially covered by her long hair.
Calling it a miracle that she hadn't been seen, Lady Godiva's husband immediately held up his end of the bargain and lowered the taxes.
