Meet Knut, the most famous polar bear in Europe.

Born December 5, 2006 at the Berlin Zoo, he and his brother were rejected by their mother after birth. (The polar bear births were the first at the Berlin Zoo in over 30 years.)

Knut's brother died after 4 days; and so, Knut was separated from his mother to be raised by human hands. He spent his first 44 days of life in an incubator and met the European press for the first time this past week.

And several European Animal rights nuts publicly advocated that he should have been killed, because he would not have survived in the wild. One wonders if they have the same approach to premature babies.

So cute! It wasn't just the European press, but press from Japan, the US and probably more that were filming him last week. They're selling shirts and toys of him already. He'll be up there with that "Free Willy" killer whale now in terms of celebrity.

Maybe some of the animal rights people should be killed because they wouldn't survive in the wild either.

Yeah, to be fair though, there were many animal rights activists condemning the "kill the bear" activist. Damn, Knut is cute. Reminds me of puppy in terms of how playful he is.

I think it was one guy who said that the bear should die because he would have died in the wild.

Personally, I couldn't disagree more with that statement. We humans have the ability to reason and by default, we have the ability to save that bear's life. My personal opinion is that humans are part of the grand scheme of the world and if we can intervene and save a bear cub from death, then that is the way that nature intended.

End of story.

Fortunately I don't think anyone would listen to that one weenie. I feel sorry for Knut that his mother abandoned him, however, it looks like he's going to be fine. It would be nice if they had another bear his age that they could pair him up with though.

I hope everything works out ok for him.

Adorable, it must be hard on the keepers when he grows to the stage where it's literally worth your life to dare to trust him an inch.

Why is it that Polar Bears are considered "cute". All I ever get is "shoot Great Bear".

Yeah I read about that animal activist(s) that said he should have been left to die because that is what would have happened naturally.

Only problem is us humans have fucked up this planet so much that what is natural now? Coupled with the fact that the mother probably wouldn't have become pregnant with him because she wouldn't have been in a zoo...the list could go on on why he should have been saved.

Anyhow, Mother nature got her groove on big time with baby animals. I mean (other than great bear) almost all baby mammals are cute as can be and just beg to be saved.

As mentioned though, all this human contact now might come back to bite his handlers in the ass when he weighs in at 1200 lbs.
