This guy going to prison, I am happy about. But I have a problem with the Government of Canada punishing people for things they do elsewhere. I do not accept that the Government of Canada owns me, and has power over me when I am not here. If I go to another country, I accept that I must follow their laws, but that should be it. If you are from Norway, and go to Germany and have sex for money, where it is legal, you can be punished in Norway. Because they are pussies. I do not think it should be that way. Governments have too much power.
Ignoring Klassen for a moment, this is an excellent point. If Klassen commited a crime in Thailand or whereever, then it should be that country that prosecutes him, not Canada. On the other hand, ever notice how Canada rushes to the aid of Canadians (except Khadr of course) who may or may not have broke the law in foreign countries?

The Americans will tax their citizens even if they live offshore. I vaguely recall the "Iranian hostages" getting a nasty letter from the IRS for not filing their U.S. tax returns on time. Being held hostage by maniac Iranian revolution guards is not an excuse for not filing your U.S. tax return on a timely basis.
I view it as the thin end of the wedge. You just know that it would politically correct to make it illegal for Canadians to fire guns in the US, visit an incall in Europe, be racist anywhere, etc.
