Corian is more than any natural material...something cheap and looks cool is concrete..you can colour it, put things in it, mix it with various stones for different effects etc.

If you're a little bit handy you can even do it yourself (a guy who lives down the hall from me did it, and he's a dentist lol).

I'm actually a contractor/cabinet maker and have done many kitchens...pm me and we can discuss further what your needs are....

Granite Transformations

You may want to check out Granite Transformations. They have some sort of engineered granite/polymer that is more durable than regular granite. This company did the countertops for my parents and they were very happy with the finished product and it was cheaper.

Well, depends on what you mean by "better". Corian comes in hudnreds of patterns and colours so you can choose exactly what you want, natural stone well, mother nature isn't perfect so there is often flaws....

Corian can be seamed invisibly, natural stone will always have a gap that has to be caulked.

If you damage corian, you can repair it invisibly. (say you gouge it or put a good scratch in it). Another feature of corian is that the colour/pattern is continuous all the way through so if you DO mark it, it won't be as noticeable as other materials.

Natural stone needs specialty tools to work, corian can be cut with any carbide tipped tool that is used for wood (router, saws, etc).

Because of the invisible seaming, you can cut corian into any shape imaginable and have it look like one continuous piece.

Corian is pricier then granite. I did granite a few years ago, buying direct from a shop, rather than through a kitchen cabinet place, and saved some $$$. I have been very happy with it.

Corian alternative

There is a Canadian made alternative to Corian called Acryflek. It is manufactured in Hamilton and there are a number of dealers in the GTA that handle it. I is usually 10 to 15% less than Corian and is identical in quality. I am an kitchen designer and could answer any other questions you have in pm if you like.
Good luck with your reno

That acryflek looks just like corian.....any idea on the price per linear foot at 24" deep? If memory serves corian is like $150 - $210.00 per (depending on pattern).

Acryflek runs about $130.00 per foot including 4" backsplash depending on the shape and complexity of the layout. All their colours are the same price.
