Mostly guns and knives. Stay inside and keep doors locked at all times. It is more dangerous than Kabul or Bagdad.

I heard a statistic somewhere that Kingston Jamaica's number of murders is the same as all of Canada.

Have fun.

Tourist areas there have a very high safety record, private beaches etc., not heard of any tourists getting killed, perhaps why they have a billion dollar tourist industry, hobbying off the beating path may get you into trouble though and you might deserve it!

the hobby needs more capitalism
I've been told as long as you're not foolish or in other words, engage in highly risky behavior you should be fine. Tourism is a huge cash cow for them and the government knows that. The police will be on your side more than the locals.

Anyone been there can confirm if I'm right or wrong?

The other tourist spots are much more popular and more geared to tourism and safety for tourists. I am referring to Negril, Ocho Rios and Montego Bay. I was in Negril last year and had no problems.

Are there any tourist resorts in Kingston. I'm not aware of any.

Most of the resorts I know of are on the other side of the island. I agree, they should be safe as long as you use common sense. I was in Montego years ago and I'd go back.

In the resorts or the country, it shouldn't be too bad. Going to Kingston would be insane.

If you like walking around go to Negril. Resorts and beaches in Montego Bay & Ocho Rios are safe but I wouldn't walk around downtown or countryside unless in a large group.
The locals WILL NOT help you if you're robbed. It happened to me in broad daylight in downtown Montego Bay, locals stood and watched, lucky a cabbie got me inside and drove away.

Okay so I'm the OP and I just got back. First of all let me clear some things up. When people stay in hotels/tourist areas in Kingston, it actually in an area called "New Kingston". There are no resorts in New Kingston, Just hotels. Kingston is a busyness town. As far as safety goes, it was like most other big cities. The real danger is in very isolated pockets. Yes there were a few more beggers and things seemed a bit sketchy in general, but the danger factor is completely blown out of proportion. I've been to Rio De Janerio, Brazil twice, and that city has way more violence than Kingston. If you ask anyone in Kingston, they,ll tell you that a white person is more safe then them because it's just assumed you are a tourist/busyness person and if anything happens to you, the police will be out in full force to nail the person that did it. The only down side I found is that no matter where you are in Kingston, the people are very jaded and are not friendly. Even people in the hospitality industry working for tips, where you think they would at least pretend to be friendly, are not.

As far as action goes in New Kingston, there is plenty full. It's on the streets as well as the strip clubs.

Now as far as looking for action, as long as your stay

Kingston is one of the murder capitals of the world. Port Antonio is the North East coast (above Kingston), which i have heard is pretty laid back but not touristy. I only ever stayed in Westmoreland and would not recomend staying outside or mingling to tough with the locals.
