The family of a man who was shot to death in Toronto's west end just under a week ago is urging his attackers to turn themselves in to police.

Kenneth Mark, 29, was shot and killed Dec. 29 in Toronto's Junction neighbourhood.

Mark was shot in the back of the head as he left a pizzeria on Dundas Street near Runnymede Road. He was heading toward a Wal-Mart outlet where he worked as a night manager.

Police believe at least two suspects were involved in the shooting — one who acted as a lookout and another who pulled the trigger. Although police have released video footage of the alleged lookout, no arrests have been made in the case.

'Backbone to our community'
"Give yourself up to the police, whoever is responsible for this," said Mark's sister-in-law, Earla Mark, addressing the attackers.

"Ken was a good man. Ken was a community liaison person. Ken was a backbone to our community and you took that away from our community," she told reporters on Tuesday.

Kenneth Mark was known in the neighbourhood for chasing away gang members trying to recruit youth, his family said.

Police and community members have suggested that Mark was targeted because of his anti-gang work, although that motive has yet to be confirmed.

Mark's older brother, Shawn, called for witnesses to come forward if they had any information about the shooting.

"Ken would do that for anybody. If he had information, he would deliver it, he would give it, he would not hesitate to do that," Shawn Mark said.

"He would do his civic duty. That's what Ken would do."

Mark's family spoke at a police-sponsored event that marked the launch of Crime Stoppers month.

The Crime Stoppers organization, now in its 16th year, seeks to help police solve crimes by gathering anonymous tips and other information from those who might be hesitant about approaching police.

But many witnesses still fear talking to authorities about crimes. No arrests have been made in 29 of Toronto's 62 homicide cases last year.

The Mark family is working with police and Crime Stoppers in the hopes Kenneth's shooter will be caught. Mark's funeral will be held on Saturday

This thread is a spin-off of another in which Rockslinger brought up Kenneth Mark being gunned down in the Junction after he stood up to gang members in the area.

I'm sad to say, I had not heard of this occurance. Maybe it was the holidays, but it sure has not been in the media.

He's a young guy who is trying to do the right thing - he's standing up to the gangs, he's working at Walmart at night, and he ends up getting murdered. This is just insane.
