Had it a couple of times while working in Fiji. It's very much part of the culture.
It's a grave error/insult to turn down a cup from the heads of households or villages. When offered, I joked that being a white guy, be gentle and they made it rather mild for me the first time. the second cup went down much more easily. It looked like dirty tea, and had an acquired taste, but the buzzy numbness basically starts at the lips, then travels to the face and then the rest of the body. The first afternoon after the initial ceremony was almost a waste as all I wanted to do was sleep, much like I have felt the few times I've had mj.
The second time, in celebration of a birth in the village I took it a 'locals' strength and don't remember much after the feast. Mind i wonder if anyone else did.
Carrying some with you, as you travel from island to island, is a good idea so you can offer the locals a gift.
