Justice Clarence Thomas, the second black man ever appointed to the United States Supreme Court, admits in a new documentary that it is not the rural sheriff, the bigot in a pickup truck or the Klansman that African-Americans must watch out for. It's the "modern-day liberal."
In an upcoming documentary, Created Equal: Clarence Thomas in His Own Words, Thomas speaks his mind about America's white liberal elite and lashes out at Democrats, and at Joe Biden in particular, who chaired the Senate Judiciary Committee during his controversial confirmation hearings in 1991.
In October of that year, Sen. Biden, then-Chair of the Judiciary Committee, asked Thomas if he had any words he wanted to share after Anita Hill publicly accused him of sexual harassment.
After categorically denying her charges, Thomas slammed the proceedings.
"As a black American, as far as I'm concerned, it is a high-tech lynching for uppity blacks who in any way deign to think for themselves," he said, "and it is a message that unless you kowtow to an old order, this is what will happen to you — you will be lynched, destroyed, caricatured by a committee of the U.S. Senate rather than hung from a tree."
In Created Equal, Thomas recalls:
I felt as though in my life I had been looking at the wrong people as the people who would be problematic toward me. We were told that, "Oh, it's gonna be the bigot in the pickup truck; it's gonna be the Klansmen; it's gonna be the rural sheriff." But it turned out that through all of that, ultimately the biggest impediment was the modern-day liberal. They were the ones who would discount all those things because they have one issue or because they have the power to caricature you.
Thomas spoke about how he believes the progressive Left dishonestly yields its power and influence in society.
"Do I have, like, 'stupid' written on the back of my shirt?" he rhetorically asked. "I mean, come on. We know what this is all about. People should just tell the truth: 'This is the wrong black guy; he has to be destroyed.' Just say it. Then now we're at least honest with each other."
"The idea was to get rid of me," he said. "And then after I was there, it was to undermine me."
Ultimately the biggest impediment [to black Americans] was the modern-day liberal. They were the ones who ... have the power to caricature you.Tweet
According to Thomas' perspective, "the wrong black guy" means one who does not conform to the stereotypical attitude of animus and victimhood that a black person "must" manifest in order to be acceptable. More important, he suggests, "the wrong black guy" is one who has the gall to challenge the status quo of "blackness," and not toe the line on the philosophical and cultural issues that are the passion of the cultural Left.
Thomas was raised and educated Catholic, and believes in natural law and objective truth. Those who do not follow the liberal piper on issues like abortion, same-sex "marriage" and the "transgender" agenda blaspheme the new religion of Progressivism. Their penalty of excommunication usually includes having their reputations destroyed and their livelihoods ruined. Thomas, like Brett Kavanaugh after him, bears the "Supreme" scars to confirm this.
Thomas may have been one of the first to experience publicly the vitriol of the "progressive" elite, truth-denying class, but public figures like Ben Carson, Candace Owens, Dinesh D'Souza and other minorities have since joined the club to be relegated to the racist liberal doghouse for their free-thinking transgressions.
There is a noticeable comparison in the religious realm that is not lost on faithful Catholics.
Like a black man who does not toe the line, a Catholic who speaks up on important Church doctrines relating to sexual morality often pays a significant price. Like conservative black Americans who experience the wrath of the white liberal establishment, orthodox Catholics who speak the truth on homosexuality, fornication, abortion and contraception often receive their own character assassinations, smear campaigns and threats to their livelihood from those embedded in the Church establishment who have lost their faith.
Justice Thomas personifies the trifecta of what the "modern-day liberal" despises: He is a black American, a political conservative and a believing Christian. To his credit, he is also the longest-sitting Supreme Court Justice of the United States.
