One of my earliest memories was noticing shadows dancing in the hall wall then running into the kitchen and watching my mom tossing the top of the pressure cooker that had oil in it being prepared for frying some chips. She grabbed the wooden handle and ran out the backdoor 10 feet away and tossing it on the lawn. The back splash behind the stove was blistered from the heat. The fireman responding said she did the right thing and probably saved the duplex we lived in. She didn't really remember doing it, just reacted. I learned that lesson early in my life.

I have a fire extinguisher in my kitchen on top of the refrigerator. Never had to use it, but it's there and simpler to use than trying to remember the methods described above in a crisis situation. You can get one at any hardware store, they don't cost much and they give peace of mind.

Fir extinguishers are one item that gets over looked. Choose the right one for the location one on each floor and maybe another one for the kitchen. Teach people in your home how to use them and check them regularly for their condition. One thing that has been pointed out to me is that the best size is the two pounder for the home, as every one can handle it, and maybe a 5 pounder for central location. It your still have fire after the 2 pounder is done, the fire is too big, so get the hell out. Second story rope ladders can be scary and tricky so practice, especially with kids.
