Just a heads up to any potential Dell purchases in the future.

I called Dell today to ask them a question regarding one of their products and the voice prompted me to either email or chat online with a Dell rep as that is how they handle all their "home product use" products from now on.
No thanks.

I may potentially be looking at a Mac now. Sorry Mike, no thanks.

I'm sure there are much greater decisions than a laptop.

I can see MJLee standing in front of lingerie trying to decide on colour and finally picking out the "red" one. :thumb:

I'm not sure I'd make the jump from Dell to Mac based on support. Dell tends to target the budget based shopper. Lenovo may be more in line with Dell in that regard.

Mac gives fewer hardware options (so less cause for things to not be compatible) and a Unix based operating system that is less prone to crashing. There are lots of reasons to prefer one line of machines over another, but dumping phone support for a new machine wouldn't be the best reason to switch in my mind.

Good answer!

As suggested already to the OP, just get a Linux laptop and be done with it.

I consider buying a mac to be a waste, unless you have a specific need for it (like intensive graphics applications) . I cant tell you the number of times Ive seen people spend 1000-2000$ on a comp/laptop/Mac. when all they need is a chrome-book for 400$ or an ultra book.
If you don't need to do much more then surf the Net then a Mac is throwing money away. I'm IT certified, so trust me and don't throw your money away. You can always send me some if you have to much.

I don't consider buying a Mac a waste at all, a better comment would be the Mac is more computer than you need if all one does is surf the net. I've been using Del, business models, only for years as I trade and need a reliable machine, have numerous programs open at one time, and quick response. The Del support group works great for me, used both their phone in and online support and the online support works fine for me. The main reason I use Del business laptops is of the warranty coverage. I can't afford any downtime and over the last 8 years I've had my hard drive replaced, on site, within 24 hrs.

Mac is a top quality machine, and IMO it's not a waste, just ensure you buy the right machine for your needs.

Same here, I decided to move on over to a Wintel machine (not any machine but an extremely powerful gaming machine) simply because I could get fast service and support for it from a local shop.

In retrospect, the amount of time spent in setting up this machine ate into any sort of savings over a new MBPr. Live and learn...
