I just got a job at Toyota working on the line. Personally, I'm not really enjoying it. Boring, repetitive work. Already talked to lots of people, seeing scars on their wrists from surgeries resulting from having carpal tunnel and related injuries. It pays well but I can't see myself staying there. Should I take off now, or tough it out for a bit?

Before you quit and walk away remember, the bills do not get paid with no money coming in. If you are unhappy and do not like the job any more there no amount of time will ever change that, you will start to resent your fellow employees and your bosses and the company.

My suggestion for the short term is talk to your supervisor or manager and ask to be moved to a different job or department doing something different, and state why.

you might also ask for some time off, you might not get paid for any time off if you have no vacation time or what ever but you take but at least you will have a chance to take a break and start pounding the pavement looking for a new job that might suit better.

But If your independently wealthy and have a spare Billion or so kicking around your pockets and you are just working for something to do, I could use a spare million. I not so proud I would gladly accept a gift!

Good Luck

I'd say Take off... I drive Toyotas and I wouldn't want mine built by someone who didn't care or like what they were doing.

keep working until you have figured out what you want and how you are going to get there. repetitive line work is good for thinkin.

One more thought

You get a job you go to "work" at the end of every day go home at the end of the week you collect a pay check you pay the bills and do it all over again next week.

a job is just that a job
"work" is a 4 letter word

Find a career

The difference between a job a a career is this
in a job you work
in carer you never work another day in your life.

Too many of us in this world just have a job I myself fall into that category
but I have other things to distracat me from my work while I find a career.

Unless you have some other job skills you might end up in another boring repeative job but chances are it will be lower paying.

As boring as your job is now it is well paid. If you want to do something else the smart thing to do would be decided first what you want to do, see what skills you need to do that, prepare yourself, then quit.

I hear cars will be obsolete in 2 years due to gas being $4.00 / litre so you will probably lose your job anyways.

yeah, he sounds like the kind of stuff GM's and Chrysler's are made of...

j/k... anyways, it is very hard to find satisfying work that pays well, with benefits, and stringent working conditions, etc..., and is still good for your health.

Quit, get out of that hell hole. Money comes and goes. Think about how you see yourself in 10-15 years and create something that you can make money from and enjoy. I did it. You can too. Don't worry about security, don't worry about bills. Dive into what makes you want to get out of bed in the morning. Life is too short to waste on bullshit.

As I believe was mentioned above, (but IMO bears repeating) do you have job skills that will enable you to find work that you will find satisfying at a rate of compensation suitably high enough for you to live the way you would like to?

After all, if you are going to end up doing repetitive labour, better you should do it at Toyota which pays much better than the minimum wage you would more likely find elsewhere. (and most likely has good benefits - which become more important than the wage as you get older)

And while there are the lucky few who say they've found a career that they enjoy so much that it's not work, for the vast majority of us the job is just the means to make the money to do the things we do enjoy outside of work.

Line work is very boring I agree - been there done that - but I stuck it out until I could move up in my company and get off the line. What are the prospects for you if you stick it out for a few years?

some of you may think I'm crazy but I'm an electronic technician. I thought I would try something different with a higher pay. But I guess I needed the challenge of fixing stuff and using my brain. I have no bills and have a good amount of savings so I walked off the job. I may go back to the company I worked for, or find another job or go back to school for training of something else. Some people could take stickers off the seat belt buckle and putting them on a piece of paper for 9 hours at a pace of 57secs for each car, but I couldn't.

Get out as soon as you can. Working at auto plants is like a trap. I know plenty of people who got in when they were young and then couldn't pull themselves out once they got used to the money. Later on they either got laid off when the Big 3 took a nosedive or they carry on in their meaningless, menial jobs.

Yes, the money is good. But no, the work is not interesting or satisfying.

I think you've already realized that so you should listen to your instincts.

What did you expect out of this job? You had to know when you applied what the work involved in a car plant would be!

on your girlfriend
Coming from a guy who has been in the automotive industry for 20 years in a number of positions (line work to management to consulting), and in about 10 different companies. Automotive is fucked everywhere ind in every company.

And I say this with all good intentions, if you decide to stay, get a good hobby where you can use your brain and feel productive. Line work is depressing and there are an unproportional number of alcoholics and drug addicts in my opinion due to mindless unfulfilling drone work.:(

Before you quit, get a plan together for what you will do if you quit.
(ie Find another, marry rich or inherent big $)
That way you know how you are going to pay the bills.
If you need a job & have one, I would be very careful about quiting in this economy

Pokergod, what kind of promotion from within policies does Toyota North America have? Also what qualifications do you have? If they intensively promote from within and you have the right qualifications it may very well be worth sticking out.
