More than a year since the allegations against CBC broadcaster Jian Ghomeshi sent shock waves across Canada, his highly anticipated trial is set to begin in Toronto on Monday.
Ghomeshi — the former host of CBC radio’s popular culture show “Q” — has pleaded not guilty to four counts of sexual assault and one count of overcoming resistance by choking.
The judge-alone trial, which is expected to last several weeks, involves three complainants and will be closely watched by many across the country.
The Toronto Star will have extensive daily coverage of the trial in Star Touch and on thestar.com, starting with a report Saturday from Kevin Donovan, who broke the story of the accusation against Ghomeshi.
“Radio is a very intimate medium and he was going into people’s living rooms five days a week,” said Marsha Barber, a journalism professor at Toronto’s Ryerson University.
“He was very influential and he had a huge listenership. Anybody who listened to him regularly is going to feel that they have a stake in what happened.”
The controversy around Ghomeshi surfaced on Oct. 24, 2014, when the CBC first said he was taking time off from his duties “to deal with some personal issues.” Two days later, the public broadcaster said it had cut ties with the popular host.

Then there's the other side of the story. How CBC's HR department completely dropped the ball (one could say intentionally) when it came to complaints against JG.

Please refresh my memory. Is there any hard objective evidence or is this an another Duke Lacrosse or West Virginia scenario?

CBC and Jian reminds of similar problems with U.S leftist organizations

http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/progressives-have-a-sexual-harassment-problem/article/2578925

The Left loves to claim moral superiority over the Right when it comes to women, coining phrases like "the war on women" and claiming Republicans want to take America back back to the "Mad Men" era.

So you'll have to excuse me for letting out a Nelson Muntz-style laugh over last week's closure of a progressive public relations firm due to accusations of sexual harassment and assault.

FitzGibbon Media closed after several prospective and current female employees accused the founder and president, Trevor FitzGibbon, of harassment. One prospective female employee provided the Huffington Post with text messages showing Fitzgibbon asking her for inappropriate photographs.

At Acculturated.com, Carrie Lukas, managing director of the Independent Women’s Forum, contended that "liberals treat women worse" than do others in positions of power on the ideological spectrum because of "The Bill Clinton Effect" — an effect with so much staying power that "progressives" still won't dare mention its obvious impact, or even the Clintons' names. -

CBC failed to provide its staff a workplace "free from disrespectful and abusive behaviour,".
Thank goodness our workplace have a "no hugging" policy. The policy was motivated by a complaint from a female staff member who complained about a male colleague who was consensually massaging the back of a female colleague's neck. The complainant said she found this behaviour very offensive and upsetting.

From what I've heard, it wasn't the HR department. They were reporting the problems but the corporate big wigs didn't want to lose their golden boy.

It's an interesting case because (based on what I know, which isn't much) he is claiming a jilted lover who isn't even part of the trial started smearing him on social media and that brought out the other complainants. Which begs the question, shouldn't that woman be called to give evidence? A woman who, he claims, was totally into BDSM and rough sex.

Not taking his side at all (I actually think he's guilty based on what little I know) but it shows the dangers of a spurned ex-lover.

It's going to be a dog and pony show.

Right now, the only thing that is for sure about this entire case is that Ghomeshi is going to be broke when this is all over.

That woman could have file a complaint with the Human Rights Commission ("HRC"). The HRC will immediately turn all their resources on the accused making him prove his innocence.

If he is found not guilty, can he sue his accusers for damages?
I think if he's found not guilty, he should count his blessings and slither away and keep his mouth shut. Last time he opened his mouth (facebook), he got himself in a whole heap of trouble.

You sure?? Ghomeshi is worth $6 mill, I doubt the trial will cost him more than $2 mill:

And its basically gonna be his word vs. their words. Unless cops have more evidence like video tapes or other types of hard evidence, there's a chance he could skate

I am sadly of the conclusion that he will be found not guilty. That said, he will never be able to find another job in Canada, or anywhere else. Road sweeper in Lethbridge? No, not even that...

I read in Toronto life that his sexy lawyer is $1,000.00 per hour.

Plus her assistants, disbursements, this that and everything else.

If you work 40 hours per week (i.e. full time), that's 2080 hours per year, or about 2.1 million per year. She has undoubtedly been doing a shit load of leg work on this one already. I would hazard a guess that JG has already paid out a million in fees.

Lastly, what someone is worth on paper and how much they have in cash in the bank are two hugely different things. I guy could be "worth" 5 million bucks, but have a couple of grand in his chequing account.

Either way, JG has no choice, and this is going to cost him large. But hey, he got himself into it, he will have to pay to get himself out of it.

He would need to seriously reinvent himself. How or where, I haven't a clue. I severely doubt it would be Canada. Maybe the UK, or more possibly Iran (they would view this kind of thing as every day married life, no big deal).

Technically, you can bring a lawsuit against anybody. But whether you win is another matter.

But in this situation...

He would have to prove "on the balance of probabilities" that the accusations the women are against him were false.

He admitted publicly that he was into violent and abusive sex.

And unless he has pretty solid corroborated evidence that they explicitly consented to the violence and abuse he inflicted upon them, before he inflicted i it, then he'd lose....and he'd be paying their legal bills.

As it is, they have a winnable civil case against him. All that would be need to be proven was the scale of actual damages. Like, did they lose their jobs. Did they have to pay for counselling etc.

I would imagine that JG has hidden a big chunk of his money somehow, somewhere.

What makes you think that?

He seems like an irresponsible guy who lives for the moment and doesn't consider long term consequences. What reason would he have to hide money? And from whom?
