Ok, I've been watching this show sporadically and got to fill in the missing parts with the marathon today.

Having grown up knowing a lot of "ginos" as we call them in the T-dot (and apparently only in the t-dot), I have to admit I had to watch the American "Guidos" and of course they are very similar although much more showy and cocky.

I've seen pictures of spike haired, orange skinned guys like Pauly on the net and thought "whadda frigging douchebag" but when you watch the show, these guys got a lot of heart and personality. I don't think it puts Italians in a bad light but I do think the show reveals the remarkable amount of racism towards Italians, hence all the fights.

On a related note, I've always heard Toronto has the most Italians outside of Italy. Is this true? Or is it only per capita and New York does in fact have a bigger population of Italians.

I would think N.y. has more Italians they came far generations earlier.
I have been around Manhattan and Brooklyn there is alot of Italians in many areas.

Toronto is the most multicultural city in the world, Out of all ethnic backrounds I would say Italians are the most.

Nope, it's true, Toronto has the biggest Italian population of any city in the world outside of Italy. Well known fact in Italy as well.

Is "guido" like the n-bomb? They use that term so freely on the show but is that because only they can call themselves that? Isn't it derogatory? I would not use the word "gino" around an Italian Canadian, as I'm sure it's derogatory.

And most of the Toronto Italians are from Abruzzo right? I actually travelled and stayed with an Abruzzese family of a friend from here. One of the best experiences of my life.

As a Canadian of Italian descent, I can tell you that I've had enough of ginos. Mostly I hate the ginos drag racing in their Ferrari's that daddy gave them and killing people. If I didn't live in Woodbridge I may be less annoyed - I doubt it.

Unfortunately there are enough of them out there that society has stereotyped the young Italian kids today, not all are Guido's thank God. I blame this shit on the parents for giving them whatever they wanted growing up and now they think the world owes them. These kids of rich parents never had to work like their parents to put food on the table and now the parents are giving them things they never had when they were growing up with little future in Italy after the second world war.

As far as most Italians in Toronto are Abruzzese, I don't have the stats on those, there Italians from all over Italy here. Certainly there will be a region that has the most but I don't think it's overwhelming, as was mentioned there are a lot of Calabresi and Friulani people, they have social clubs all over the city, mostly in the West end.

I don't know where you went to school but at my school when the Italians were called Ginos the only thing they "embraced" was the guy who called them that in a headlock before beating the shit out of him. It is no differen't then calling an Indian a "P*ki", an Asian a "Ch**k" or "G**K", an Irishman a "M**k". As tarkovsky states it is used freely on the show because they are referring to themselves mostly. When it is used as a term of derision or negativity, especially from someone not of Italian descent, it is not going to be embraced.

I have family in NJ, the third generation has become very affluent. They take greater pride in their traditions than we do here in Toronto. Most of all they have taught their kids to be proud of their heritage without making a mock parody of it.

I'm a first generation Canadian (granted I was 7 when I immigrated here), I grew up at Caledonia and Rogers Rd. At that time no one used the term "gino" but if a non-Italian wanted a fight "wop" would guarantee that.

I remember Rudy Guliani hated the glorification of the mob with the Sapranos (Guliani was a prosecutor who was known for being tough on the mob) and tried to bar the actors from marching in some Italian Day parade in NYC. Lots of Italian-Americans disliked that show too

Yes it's a slur but not on the level of dago or guinea (the latter is really old school).
