I spent a lot of time in my early 20's there.

well first time i got fired after one day one the job but i went back a year later.

spent some time with an amazing girl from gaspesie which was the first girl who confirmed that i could make it with good looking girl.

I cleaned the toilet of the jasper youth hostel for a month in order to stay for free. Crazy to say but it still was the best time of my life.

Seeing the town burning is hard.

Very unfortunate. I was there in November when taking the Canadian from Vancouver to Toronto. Such a pretty little town. I feel for those who live, work, and own businesses there.

We all need to prepare ourselves for such catastrophe and realize the insurances will be near impossible in the future.

That's a footage from the western part which seems all gone That's the residential part mainly. I think about 2000people lost their homes.

i have heard the east and central downtown are still up, so is jasper park lodge which was affected but main structure still up.

recent rain may save the rest of the city.

I wonder if insurance companies will try to weasel their way out of paying somehow.

in Florida, Napples, an uncle of mine is without insurance because he can't cover it. An hurricane destroyed most houses few years ago. His house remained intact but he cannot cover the cost anymore. He said most who lost their homes had to fight with insurance so long that they either died or just gave up...

I hope the people of Jasper will get their home rebuild but good darn luck to them to insure it for the future...

We need to rebuild our homes out of concrete!

on my first stay there after first day of work me and my new coworker went to a bar that was located in a hotel. We met 2 girl from Quebec city. One things leads to another we ended up jumping in the indoor hotel pool. Security kicked us out but next day the word was out... Misconduct or something ... Well also one of the girl had removed her shirt. This was early 90's. Having girls all wet in tiny bra was shocking for them. For us in quebec it was no big deal. I remember the guy that fired me seemed more jealous than pissed

I went back for 2 more years. The party at Jasper Park Lodge staff house were quite something.

That Gaspesie girl ho my... Once in a bar all tall good looking guys were trying to hit on her. She was with me she said. One dude came to see me to ask what the fuck was i doing with such a knockout. The reality was that i never cared all my life about looks only.

Seeing so many of Jasper burned down now is really sad. But i guess it's our new reality. These towns in the north all over the country from BC to Quebec are surrounded by pine trees. These burns fast and with a bit of wind makes the fire move so fast. It would cost billions to protect all these towns.

Do we spend billions of tax money to protect a few 500k homes or try to help the thousands and thousands of poor get a roof?

i did. I agree with it. But the article never say why they didn't do anything. Yes it seems to be easier to blame climate change.

But again Jasper is just a small town... My little suburban city where i live is 10 time bigger. Policy goes to where voters are i think.

Would it be different under conservative leadership? I really doubt.

I'm definitely left. I don't disagree that this was caused by mismanagement. However this article conveniently avoids identifying why the dead forest got so dry. It's been getting hotter every year. So yes, mismanaged forest, but it wouldn't be such an issue if it weren't so hot. Also, there have been more fires worldwide in increasing severity in the last decade or so (autralia, greece, hawaii) pointing to a global issue.
Maybe both sides would do better to look at all the data rather than hang on to buzzwords and look for ways to blame the other side.
