There’s are times as your game progresses that you like to revisit courses you’ve played before & get a yard stick on how your game has improved over the years. It was under these circumstances that I recently found myself at Jasmin Woods in KW. The course has been an old favourite of mine for years – having first played it 3 years ago and been impressed with the layout & design at that time & over a handful of outings since. While the course isn’t as highly regarded by some golfers locally (possibly due to a strict regard for golf etiquette), it’s still a beautifully kept course that will reward good shot making.

The pro shop does an impeccable job – easy booking by e-mail, confirmation by e-mail & then by phone the day of. In several rounds booked over the last few I’ve yet to have a tee time misplaced or an unexpected rain out - something too many local courses don't seem to have mastered yet.

On this day I was only playing 9 holes due to work constraints, but the starter & other staff still treats golfers with due regard. One word of warning – the course is marshalled & they strictly enforce RCGA rules of play & discourage shots out of bounds into the nearby wetlands. You definitely don’t want to lose a ball on this course.

On to the course – I’d hazard it was built in the early 1980’s and considerable attention to upkeep has been made over the years. I’d say the course itself is in its prime right now.

The unique features of the course include water holes to bookend your nine – the first hole features some nice twists & turns on the run up to an elevated green. You have to work to keep your concentration about you since the water is fast flowing and works itself to a lather.

The rest of the course is a links style course – if you’re patient & choose your clubs wisely you’ll find the course opens up to your style of play while encouraging you to follow the local rules & etiquette. Careful shot making is definitely rewarded – this is definitely not the course for you if you’re a big swing, ball out of play type player. Penalty strokes could mar your score on this scenic track & leave you disappointed in your round.

Highs: An engaging course that will encourage effective shot making & target golf.
Lows: Other than the aforementioned strict rules of conduct, none.

A special thank you to the pro shop for attention to detail & an entertaining discussion of the grand old game.

PS - Just to clarify (compliments of Happygrump): the JW course is strictly an "entertainment only" course and access to the core of the grounds is specifically prohibited.

Excellent critique of this course Rogie. Sounds like you really enjoyed playing on this course and I completely appreciate your experience on this layout.
Nice to hear this course has an efficient and reliable pro shop, unlike another course in the area with the initials RJ, without mentioning names. With a respnsive pro shop, that is the first step in enjoying the play on the course and makes you want to go back on a regular basis. I took a quick peek at the course and she sure looks like a beauty. I got to keep practising though as my club swing has my balls going out of bounds on a regular basis. I hope to soon fix that and enjoy those courses that allow no out of bounds play.
Congrats again on a great review and sharing it with us.
