Jailbreaking your iOS device may be officially permitted under the DMCA, but that presumes there’s a jailbreak out there to run. Happily, anyone with an iOS 3.1.2, 3.1.3, 4.0, 4.0.1 or iPad 3.2.1 device now has a super-straightforward way to jailbreak, thanks to comex’s new JailBreakMe site.

Doing so is as easy as visiting http://jailbreakme.com/ on your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad and sliding the appropriate control. Right now the site is up and down as eager users attempt to access it, so you may be better off waiting a while.

Of course it’s also worth remembering that, while the DMCA says it’s okay, Apple says jailbreaking your device will nonetheless invalidate your warranty. As with any hack, attempt it at your own risk!

In fact, since no PC or Mac is required for this jailbreak, one might be able to do it anywhere there is a data connection… like in an Apple Store… using one of the iPhone 4 display models.

Now that the weakness has been revealed, all ios4 devices are at risk. severe risk. i wouldn't be installing 4 on any device until the security hole is plugged (well, then I'd wait until the jailbreak is released too).

yes, contrary to what djk would like you to believe the iOS is very vulnerable and apparently easy to crack. simply by visiting a website puts your iphone/ipad/itouch at risk if the site takes advantage of an exploit in the safari browser that will automatically open pdf files which can contain VERY malicious code.

Two Unpatched Flaws Show Up In Apple IOS

"The technique that the Jailbreakme.com Web site is using to bypass the iPhone's security mechanisms and enable users to run unapproved apps on their phones involves exploiting two separate vulnerabilities. One of the vulnerabilities is a memory-corruption flaw that affects the way that Apple's mobile devices, including the iPad and iPod Touch, display PDFs. The second weakness is a problem in the Apple iOS kernel that gives an attacker higher privileges once his code is on a targeted device, enabling him to break out of the iOS sandbox. The combination of the two vulnerabilities--both of which are unpatched at the moment--gives an attacker the ability to run remote code on the device and evade the security protections on the iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. The technique became public earlier this week when the Jailbreakme.com site began hosting a set of specially crafted PDF files designed to help users jailbreak their Apple devices and load apps other than the ones approved by Apple and offered in its official App Store."


Apple have said they are aware of the problem and will patch it at a time to be determined as yet.

I suggest all iDevice users don't use the Safari browser untill it is patched. Opera have an excellent and imo a better browser available for Apples devices. use that and you will be safe for now


The security flaw is so serious that the German government issued an official warning to citizens about it on Wednesday and said it was investigating.
Apple declined to comment on Germany's Federal Office for Information Security's statement.
