But, they where then defeated. The song "The Star Spangle Banner"
was the result of that battle. It's sad and amazing how nationalism

Help me out here. I'm aware of the battles between American troops and Canadian troops in Upper Canada. I have never read anything about Canucks burning the US Capitol. It was the Brits was it not?

At the time it was the same army, I believe.

the Great Lakes. Those that burned the Capital were all British. Restrain
yourself, sir.

Eventually they were defeated after inflicting devastation on DC.
Its a sorely misunderstood history in British/American relations.

You’re right about it being British regulars that attacked Baltimore and Washington. However, technically I think that you're wrong about it being Canadian sailors that manned the ships on the great lakes. There were many members of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment that manned these ships. However, not only did Newfoundland not become part of Canada until 1949 (even today, many Newfies would be offended at your lumping them in with Canadians ) but it was actually a British regular regiment. Where the Canadian militia did play an important role was in the defence of Upper and Lower Canada and the attacks launched from there into the U.S.

I assume that you’re talking about the Battle of New Orleans as the same troops were involved in both battles. However, I am sure that you know that the peace treaty had already been signed by then (the commanders forgot to check their e-mail that morning ) so while the battle was a defeat for the British, it changed nothing.

Edit: BTW, You may already know this but the attempt to burn down the Whitehouse was in retaliation for the Americans burning the town of York (now Toronto) despite agreeing not to in the surrender documents for York. York was the capital of Upper Canada so the idea was a capital for a capital. Thus, there was a Canadian connection in the attack on Washington.
