and the air-conditioning is broken in the whole condo building, looks like it might be a while before it's fixed, it's stifling hot in here...I have to buy a couple of fans tonight, it's just that unbarable.

Question, should I deduct the expense from the rent?

There is no right of set off in a typical residential lease. If the landlord acts in a reasonable fashion to get repairs done then there is really no recourse.

the landlord can't fix it, it's condo managment who is responsible for fixing it, but they advised us that that they have to wait for a part to clear customs and they are speculating 1-2 weeks. In this heat I think that's too long. Also I won't need the fans once the air is back on.

No. If the tap was leaking or there was an electrical fault, yes. But buying a fan for comfort does not qualify as an emergency repair.

Go buy a portable air conditioner from Futureshop for $450-700 and return it for a refund as soon as your building has fixed the problem. Just tell them it is a piece of shit and make sure you return it within 30 days

Some Future Shop items have a 14 day return policy, I believe air conditioners are in this category.

So one more day of being in hell...This heat makes you feel like being in the firey pits of hell.

I love the heat and combined with the humidity is makes for pretty nice weather.
