ISO - Via Rail

I considering a couple of brief getaways in the upcoming weeks to Ottawa & Montreal. Usually when I go on business I fly, but since this is coming out of my own pocket I decided to look at Via Rail instead.

Has anyone taken the train recently? What's the service / ride like vs an airplane? What's the difference between Via1 and "Comfort Class"? Is it comparable to biz class & economy on an airplane?

I've only taken economy on VIA but I prefer it much more than economy on a plane and even business class on a plane. Economy seats on VIA are bigger than on a plane. Service is not much if you are thinking in terms of meals and such. No free meals or drinks.

I don't like flying in general because of the hassle of checking in early and such while with VIA you just hop on the train which is nice.

Unfortunately VIA is not that cheap. You don't save that much if you get a good deal on plane tickets. If it was cheaper I'd use it all the time.

I looked at taking the train to NY; until I saw the prices that is. I could go for significantly cheaper by plane, taking into consideration how much faster it would have been.
