I'm starting to hear a lot about liquid cooled CPUs in computers. Apparently Apple Computer is working on such a system for their next generation of laptop potentially to be released in the summer. The benefits to liquid cooling are greater speed from CPUs as thermal limits are pushed off, and quieter ("near silent") desktops that don't need fans.
Does anyone know any of the details about this liquid cooling technology? I'm just curious as to how it's going to work. Will water have sufficient thermal capacity to work or will the coolant be some type of synthetic? I'm assuming that whatever the coolant is, it won't punch massive gaping holes in the ozone if it leaks. But if there is a coolant leak, how will the hardware react? Will the CPU just slow itself down as it reverts to (passive) air cooling? Will the coolant need pumps in order to flow properly?
