Has anyone been through a 6 sigma implementation at their workplace? Did it significantly affect (positively) output quality? I'm trying to figure out if this is something I should implement in my department at work.

Did 6 sigma. In theory it's wonderful. A useful tool

In practice, well, let's just say it's a great management tool - mostly used for publicity and promotion. Yep, even at GE.

I'm not knocking 6 sigman per se. But some companies tend to build a little beaurocracy around it...making it cumbersome and expensive.

It's a good tool, but just a tool.

What the frig is a 6 sigma implementation????
Or are you just trying to sound important???
6 Sigma is a methodology through which an organization is supposed to deliver near-perfect products & / or services. It was popularized under the watch of Jack Welsh at GE. Theoretically the methodology will drive no more than 3.4 defects per one million opportunities. (I'm not sure why it's 3.4 as opposed to any other number.)

Does it have anything to do with the ISO standard???

Not really. As xarir said, it's not a standard, it's a method of identifying and reducing defects.

Thanks for the comments Meesh (and everyone else).

I'm beginning to get a tad wary of service standards in my department and would like to do something about them before they become a real issue let alone a problem. While the standards are generally high, they aren't always consistently high. I was wondering if 6 sigma might be a useful tool if implemented properly.

Back Burner - I'll be investigating 6 sigma more thoroughly in the coming weeks. If I can find out a way to earn the belts independently I'll let you know. I would imagine that at minimum you'd have to take an exam or something to be properly certified as a Master Black Belt. The other belts might be different though.

.
Yes.

Keywords 'implemented properly'

But it's not fast, and can cost some $$..and it requires a lot of management support.

Yes well, isn't that always true of everything in business? ;) Success is most often defined through proper execution which in turn is only made possible by proper implementation of business strategy.
Absolutely.

It also includes planning - knowing exactly what you're getting into - and the gonads to follow it through.

Ya they use that at Alliedsignal Aerospace. Parts can't fuck up when they're at 30,000 feet. I recommend it.
