Rob Ford has just offered the toronto police an 11% increase ( over 4 years) . Considering the uproar over the Premier giving opseu 1%, I would now expect a round of heated indignation from the right wing guardians of the public purse......what is that sound....a tumbleweed? The boys in blue are celebrating down at Tim Horton's for sure. Another round of Crullers for the boys, Madge!
And when is Rob going to relax the regulations on having to hire paid duty officers to spleepwalk during road and sidewalk repairs, even on quiet streets. Hell, they could get off duty crossing guards to do that for a fraction of the expense.
Yeah, Rob is tough on the public housing front, but a real pussy when it comes to his fellow overweight brethren who pull in upwards of 100k per annum.

I think the issue is the 1% is being added to contracts already in effect, and it was done very quietly.

Not going to be surprised Ford is stealing a page from Scott Walker of Wisconsin. ;)

BTW, not going to be surprised BIN/WM/VE/RSG of the world would bid the contracts of soon to be outsourced garbage collection.

Moreover, let see whether Ford has the guts to inflict more blow on the TTC unions by outsourcing the subway maintenance jobs to Bombardier, just like GO trains.

We could contract out a lot of boring mundane stuff the cops do, save ourselves a shitload of money. We don't use them to handle parking tickets, why not do the same with speeders?

Perhaps the Mayor (and most generally law abiding taxpayers) see value in an annual 2.65% (=11% over 4 years) increase for police who may be underpaid for the risks they take
Perhaps they also do not see value in rewarding OPSEU who may be overpaid for the services they deliver.
Perhaps they do not like backroom deals

The comparison is not at all relevant

Of course it is. these raises are cost of living adjustments. Just goes to show that whole funeral for the dead cop was just marketing for this big fat raise. I could see it coming a mile away. DISGUSTING!!!

of course i am, because i point out the hypocrasy of the right, which loves to tighten belts, except when it comes to cops, military and prisons
It's called priority spending. I'd rather see money spent on keeping us safe than all the pet projects under the Miller regime.

Translation:

It's OK for the government to spend like drunken sailors and go massively into debt, forcing huge tax rises in the future, so long as it's spent on a right wing priority.

No its not a relavant comparison.
Not even close.

Perhaps you had some bad experiences with Law enforcement
However most Law abiding citizen's are very thankful for a police presence

OPSU- Now there is a area ripe to be outsourced at a much more cost effective rate

Since there was no publicity around the negociations, and the Fords gave the union a deal they were happy with, one must assume the constables who will now get $90,000 were underpaid before. Funny how other towns and cities can achieve the same or better crime stats for less. Why don't we ask Intelligarde to bid on policing?

Seems to me there's a lot more gravy riding around in cruisers than there is walking miles behind trash trucks everyday and slugging 20 kilos of stinking trash into it every few minutes. Every job is valuable to the city; we should apply the same thoughtful process to determining how we buy every service.

Nothing special about police. By this standard the entire force will hit the Sunshine Law's 100K threshold for straight time in just a few years. Good conservative standards in the law and its practice by the Fords; we should all be so grateful.

I think you are just jealous that the only people who are going to show up at your funeral are a few burned out marxist anti-semitic homeless alcoholics.

You are so behind the times. Cops don't hang out at donut shops anymore, it is sub shops now.

You should have said: "Another round of footlongs on me Marge."

You all think cops have dangerous jobs, more citizens die each year than cops by a wide margin. Just think about it.

while i think it can be a difficult job, it would not be hard to replace them at half the salary.

garbage men work twice as hard as police and and get more serious injuries for half the pay, yet ford wants to ditch them.
Truckers work twice the hours for half the pay and probably die on the job at a much higher rate.
