is it possible to install one version of windows over another without formatting?

I have a computer in one of my offices i want to put xp pro on, but i cant lose some of the propietary programs that are no longer avalable

it is running xp now

the hardware can handle it so I am not worried about that.

thanks

With an OEM version, can't be done
With a Retail version, I would be hesitant, because even tho it should work fine, theres always a risk of something going wrong
With a hacked copy, I wouldn't take the risk.

you could probably get 3rd party software for what you want.

How did you install the programs in the first place ?

It is possible to re-install the Windows.. but you run the risk of corrupting the proprietary software install. What i would do, is spend $100 get a 250GB HD (best bang for the buck), and mirror your current hard drive. Then go ahead with the re-install knowing that you can always go back to square 1. ;)

XP Home vs. Pro ? What networking do you want in Pro that Home doesn't have? Remote Desktop is hardly reason to move and risk f'ing up the proprietary stuff. Download UltraVNC and use it instead of RDP. It's free and it works.

Another reason to switch, XP Pro is considered a bit more stable than XP Home.
