Is it just me or the quality of meat and produce sucks in GTA

Particularly meat at grocery stores. I feel like its barely good enough to feed my dog.

I remember precovid it wasn't this bad. What I used to get at regular grocers back then is now triple the price at niche butchers.

I’ve been buying meat from butchers forever, learned that from my parents. It makes sense but the convenience of picking up everything on one spot has to come at a price… if your grocery store has a butcher in it that’s a step in the right direction but a butcher shop butcher is where it’s at

I find it rare to find nice berries in particular. Apples and pears are hit or miss. The prices just exasperate the situation. If I could find remote work, I would move to a rural town and grow my own

I'll be checking out the local butcher shops here eventually this year. But I still usually get chicken breasts from a chained grocery store. I'm sure it's crappy meat and they add dye colour to make it look appealing than it is. Fruits get annoying as much as I enjoy them because it's hit or miss. Especially with blackberries and strawberries which my kids highly enjoy.

Not sure how many users here have been to Europe, but I haven't but I heard the overall food there is much better compared to North America. Apparently with all the stuff added to produce in North America it's one of the reasons people end up having issues and see a doctor. I think stuff is still better regulated in Europe.

True, I am allergic to apples. Spoke to a friend told me his is also but when in the UK apples didn't bother him at all. Something to do with pesticides.

GMO’s are illegal in many European countries, and some food from North America is considered toxic and can’t be sold there. Unlike North American governments some of the governments in Europe actually care about the health of it’s citizen.

”The European Union (EU) has a long history of restricting genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Some EU countries have banned GMO cultivation, while others have adopted national opt-out measures”

”Several North American foods considered "toxic" in Europe include: pork containing growth hormones like ractopamine, certain farmed salmon raised with antibiotics and synthetic coloring, food containing potassium bromate (a dough enhancer), azodicarbonamide (a flour bleaching agent), and certain artificial food dyes, all of which are often banned or heavily restricted in the EU due to potential health concerns”

Try a local butcher in your area and you'll notice a difference in the quality of the flavour and taste. Many years ago I bought steak and pork chops from a grocery store and compared them to my local butcher when barbequed. Grocery store stuff was passable but lacked in flavour, texture and taste compared to the same from local butcher.
Cost wise my local butcher is about the same as the grocery store so why buy crap when you can buy better quality from your local butcher.

I buy most of my meat from the butcher shop and some select grocers like Longo's or Fortino's. Never from Metro, Loblaws, Sobeys, Wal Mart or the discount grocers. Yuck.

Grocery store meat is not aged its literally 2 days old, it's full of red dye and the cheapest quality. Independent butcher's meat is aged at least 20 days or longer, contains no coloring and is chosen in smaller quantities therefore better quality. Its also much more expensive but for me I don't each much of it it's more of a special occasion think so it doesn't effect my budget much.

I mainly do poultry and Fish.
Fish I usually buy at St. Lawrence market.
Not sure if poultry is worth buying at a higher price at the butchers.
