No, one set of guys/gals making the rules and one set standing on the wall.danmand said:Oh don't stop there, say what you really mean: A country to command.
Thankfully, MacKenzie has left the military.
In general, I respect MacKenzie’s opinions but in the case of the Iraq war I think that he is simply wrong.onthebottom said:"But MacKenzie firmly believes force is sometimes necessary. "I stand here as a member of a diminishing minority that says the war in Iraq was the right thing to do."
Even if the number quoted is correct it technically would not qualify as genocide unless it was an attempt to wrap out an identifiable ethnic group. It was (and is) bad but so are conditions in North Korea. However, given that this had nothing to do with the reasons for invading Iraq it is not really relevant anyway.onthebottom said:Undeterred, MacKenzie said Saddam Hussein "was killing 60,000 to 80,000 of his people a year."
That qualifies as genocide, he said, which should have prompted the U.N. to intervene.
I completely agree here. I think that too many Canadians have gotten the mistaken impression that the Canadian forces are a bunch of police officers and Boy Scotts who hand out traffic tickets.onthebottom said:MacKenzie told the Star that he likes what some might call the politically incorrect style of Canada's top general, Rick Hillier. "I'm very keen on generals giving unfettered advice."
You might be interested in knowing that MacKenzie and the “CD General” you mention disagree strongly on what the lessons of Rwanda were. As far as the office corps is concerned, I’m not sure that I would generalize too much (OK, as a former OR I guess that you might expect me to say this ). I think that many are realizing that a mistake was made when the military and civilian branches at DND headquarters where merged at the time of unification. It blurred the lines between the senor officers’ role in providing honest assessment to politicians and the civilians who had a duty to reflect the Minster’s wishes. In the end, it is important for the civilian authorities to have the final say. However, it should be the military’s role to give honest professional military (not political) advice. Many now think that this distinction was blurred when the two branches were merged at DND HQ.onthebottom said:Well I think you've found at least two Canadian males who are not pussies! But then again, as this forum as shown, you can always find a General to support any position. After having read the book by the CD General who commanded the Rwanda peace keeping mission it occurs to me you have a fine officer corps up there - you should really consider giving them a military to command.

This from the "man" who told me to go fuck my mother....DonQuixote said:I can think of one difference. They're far more civil than you ever thought of being.
And I've said at least a 100 times that I've never served in the military, that I respect anyone who has - but yet.........DonQuixote said:I apologized and you accepted same.
Strange, apparently you didn't accept my apology.
Or, did you just forget?
Nobody here in North America but us pussies, eh?onthebottom said:We're just someone to sell your stuff to.....
Just kidding. With all the hysteria on this board I've never had a single issue with any Canadian I've ever meet. I have many Canadian friends (and a few employees) and their all great folks. Much can be made of the differences but I think you have to try pretty hard to find any real ones.
