yes.. Is an MBA worth it? will it help me make more money and understand running a business better? i have little to none business background and feel I should go for an MBA, perhaps a part-time or online course, so it will help me run my business one day.

Would it lead to better job prospects?

I work in a vertical with lots of MBAs. Where I see it paying of for people is in making the jump from high-level exec to C-level. You are expected to be able to think in a truly strategic fashion at that level.

At an entry or middle manager level I don't see it doing much for my co-workers at all. Until you get up there a bit your experience counts far more than and advanced degree.

I think it is worth it for some people.
Some people who want to excel in the corporate world will probably find the MBA very beneficial. If you want to be an I-banker, or get into mergers and acquisitions, for exmaple then sure an MBA helps alot.

But from what you said, it sounds like you already have a business. In this case I would say no, just take a few courses or some self study.

IMHO I think MBA are totally overpriced and very dependent on the school you go to as well.

Things like business, can be self-taught as well. grab a first year University Management text, and take it from there. Lots of usefull info there.

no, school is basically completely worthless unless you want to become a lawyer, engineer, doctor.

i paid $45k for mine. Never used it aside from putting it on the resume. Looks good on my business card though...Like others above have said, its good for getting an 1.)interview 2.)moving to exec level positions or 2.)getting into finance or i-banking (even than u need to tag an additional CFA or CA to that).

if u are looking to run your own business, than u will do just as well taking part time college courses or researching on the internet... unless u need to use Black Scholes to figure to the value of the options u should pay yourself.

thanks for all the comments... yeah, at this point, I realize that getting a masters or doctorate is worth jack shit if one can't make use of it in the real world. I don't care so much about the paper that says I have an MBA, but more interested in the experience to run a business or think like a business man.

I don't run a business yet but have plans to start my venture real soon and want to learn as much about business as possible. I may not sign up for part-time or online courses either, instead just do it as a self guided study if it means saving money and getting close to the experience of signing up for uni courses.

If you're planning to work in a corp environment, and advance to a sr mgr, director, vp or higher, then an MBA is a minimum requirement.
They don't say that it is, but most people you'll be competing with will have one.
I.e in banking, the majority of the people at these levels have an MBA. It's a not even a consideration, it's like finishing high school, its a min requirement.
The only general exception to this is if you're in a CS or Engineering environment.

If you're going to run your own business or a start up, I wouldn't recommend it, because you will lose 2 years in the program, for info you will learn on the fly. Then again, unless you know the MBA designation is a must to get clients for your line of work.

An MBA is certainly "worth it" for at least two reasons:

1. If you did your undergrad in an under-employed field (e.g., psych, sociology, English), an MBA will make you more marketable and at least competitive.

2. If you go to a good school (Harvard, LSE, INSEAD, etc). For those of us who grew up in public schools and community centres, an MBA is a great chance at building a network with people who will make decisions.

it depends on your background. say you avoided going to viet nam and walked out on your national guard obligations, drank too much and had bad marks in school but your dad could get you into the harvard MBA program- then its worth it.

And do not forget that the average MBA new graduates are only earning $76 to $90 k. Stanford University grads average just under $118,000 as their starting salary. George shoe box MBA program grads however get considerably less. LOL I guess you pay back the $100,000 cost within 3 or 4 years, after that it is pure profit.

30% of new businesses in Canada go bankrupt within 5 years. NY Times claim it is because the people running them lack the skills needed. MBA is a short cut to having those skills.

Is it worth it? I guess it depends if you take under water basket weaving or the hard courses :)

MSOG probably wouldn't agree because he thinks schools like Harvard, Stanford and Berkley are crap and not worth the time.

As for the OP, imsc, i have a few friends who have had follow up studies at Queen. You do most of your work away from Queens until the end at which time you spend a couple of weeks in the summer on campus. It may be changed a bit, but who knows.
