I've got an iPod that's about 2-3 years old. It's a 20 GB, full size version.

Is it normal to lose a very significant chuck of the 20 GB to an unknown source (presumably program files)? Right off the bat I've got 5.94 GB used up and iTunes lists it as "Other" (rather than Audio).

Is this normal?

I think that's an abnormally large amount of space. On my 4Gb ipod mini, I have 23Mb listed as "other".

NO that needs to be reset through the software.......... if u r on a Mac in the Utilities folder you can reset it with the update software .... not sure on a Windows box.
You could also cd down to it through the terminal and see what is taking up all the space. It could be photos if i u have asked to copy originals as well as thumb nails.

If you can see the hard drive in "my computer" on windows try checking properties and disc cleanup -some MP3 player hard drives have recycle bins that have to be emptied .

"cd" means "change directory", i.e. look at the files on the ipod. In itunes you can check the box that says to allow the ipod to be seen as a hard drive and then use the standard windows explorer to look at its files and folders/directories to find out what is taking up the space.

I did that and almost all of the files and folders appear as fucked up symbols. I can tell how big they are, but I can't tell which file is which. :(
