iPhone?

If you were to purchase a iPhone down in US, does it work with the current Roger's / Fido SIM card?

I was thinking on buying a iPhone down in Buffalo and use my current Roger's sim card. Does anyone know if this will work? My current Roger's cell phone is multi-ban GSM with a SIM card. I've read that the iPhone is a GSM phone and that it uses a SIM card. I was hoping that I could simply put my current sim card in it and use.

Can anyone shed any light on this question? Is anyone using a iPhone here in Toronto? What do you like about it and what don't you like about it?

Regards

Mack

The iphone will need to be "unlocked" first as it is locked in to the AT&T system. There is a Battery Plus store in Scotia Plaza's basement level that sells unlocked iPhones but I expect that they are expensive.

Also be aware that the data cost in Canada via Rogers is extremely expensive and not unlimited.

ie see article.

Good luck and if you do get it working let me know as I would like to get one as well.

The last time I checked US iPhones were locked for AT&T. You can unlock them, but you'll void your warranty and Apple has in the past purposely killed unlocked iPhones. The iPhone is pretty dated anyway.

See this recent article;-

I have heard that there are places at the Pacific Mall at Kennedy/Steeles where you can now get the phone unlocked for a fee. There is also a place on Yonge Street in North Toronto who can now do it for a $75 fee. I guess you need to shop around.
It does work with the Rogers phone card since they are both similar GSM cards. However I have not heard of any compatability with other phone carriers.

Rogers has the only GSM network in Canada, so the service would have to be through them. Telus is talking of getting part of their phones on GSM, but are still CDMA, as is Bell. CDMA is the North American standard, while GSM is the standard for the rest of the world.

Getting back to the OP: yes, you can get an unlocked Iphone to work on Rogers, and, although the previous firmware releases bricked unlocked devices, the latest update seems not to do that. I said "seems", because I'm still skeptical. But read the link below (very reliable source):

Agreed Dreamblade. Telus customers should expect to wait another 5 years, until GSM is available through TELUS. (Dare I say - extend that contract a little bit?)^_-

Apparently, the newer stock 1.1.3 iPhones have just been "jailbreaked". There's also a special proxy sim card ($80) that makes them act like they are unlocked so just buy

I have one and love the thing. It has everything you could ask for.
I bought one in toronto for 600 then bought another 2 in buffalo.
Had all three broken. The last one was ver 1.1.2 and the sim card had to be married to another card for the phone to work. However, if your looking in toronto, then look no further than Ming Wireless at college and university.
I highly recommend this guy. He will set you up.
