Yep, you heard that right. There are now more iPad users than Linux users:

http://royal.pingdom.com/2011/04/20/ipad-used-more-than-linux-computers/

And in less than a year to boot! :p

"In other words, the iOS market share you see in the chart is only for iPad. It does not include the iPhone or iPod Touch. We’ve verified this with Statcounter, just to be entirely sure.

Not only is iPad now so widely used that it shows up in this list, iOS for iPad has managed to pass Linux as a “desktop OS” (we use quotes, because tablets will probably soon make up their own category). In fact, it passed Linux sometime around December. Not bad for a device that was launched just back in April of 2010."

Apples
& Oranges nibs....

Apple is a capitalistic venture, with a lot or slick marketing glitz set up to make a fast buck by picking the pockets of kids and rubes.
While Linux is a far more altruistic venture with none of the above....

Again Apples & Oranges nibs.
Comprehension of that concept seems too deep and beyond your grasp.....:eyebrows:

Linux never intended to be Number 1 or make a lot of bucks.
Linux is just a fine alternative for those seeking freedom from the M$ & Apple monopolies.....

Interestingly Linux generates more money than Apple OS....

Microsoft Earns 79% of the $30 Billion Global OS Market

We all know that Windows dominates the OS market in terms of market share, but rarely do you see someone talk about the most important number in the OS wars, revenue. Today Gartner offered up its estimations on the various OS player’s, and the results put Microsoft in a dominate lead, with $8 out of every $10 spent on operating systems ending up in the companies coffers. The results, which include server products, give the Redmond based software giant a 78.6% share of the pie, with Apple scraping by on a mere 1.7 percent. When you consider that in 2010 the OS market was worth $30.4 billion, the stakes here are definitely worth pay attention to.

Some analysts have called out the report as a success for Apple, not because of the overall market share numbers, but because of growth. Apple’s OS revenue grew by 15.8% compared to Microsoft’s 8.8%. Of course you could make the argument that percentages often favor the smaller guy, but clearly they are still doing something right. Linux comes up short in the results primarily because the vast majority of users simply download the latest and greatest version every few months for free. Red Hat, a popular Linux support service did make the list, but only earned enough revenue to place fifth.(ahead of Apple)

The scientific method behind gathering these results wasn’t mentioned in Gartner’s blog post, but in general this is a pretty respected research company. I think it’s safe to say they’ve done their homework.

First you say that Linux is an altruistic venture not meant to make lots of $$$, then, you're all happy-happy that Red Hat makes more money than Apple when it comes to OS sales.

Should change your nick to Janus...

That's probably because it requires a little more knowledge and effort to work Linux, as opposed to going into a store, paying a premium for a product that's made of PC components and an OS that's BASED on Unix.
I LOVE Win7 on my 3 year old desktop - which runs incredibly fast - after an upgrade to 8RAM and a SSD boot drive, no more than $250 in upgrade (original system cost $500).
Linux breathed new life into my 4 year old Dell laptop, more money in my pockets.

But that's the best part of life I guess, variety, it's the spice or something. ;)

So the "free" alternative costs more but serves fewer customers.....

What is really going on here is that Linux for end users is a very small (geek) market where as Linux for servers is a low cost (read not free) alternative to Unix. As the village idiot would say, Apples and Oranges....

Wouldn't Steve Jobs be considered a geek?

If it wasn't for geeks, you wouldn't have your beloved Apple products that you brag so much about, which in turn boosts your ego and possibly acts as a penis extension.
Hatin' on geeks, that's akin to biting the hand that feeds you.

WOW you are about as s-l-o-w as your new found sock-puppet pal, Detective AppleJack. Linux founder Linus Torvalds has repeatedly stated his purpose was altruistic in nature. However Linux beauty lies in its over 100 flavors and of course some are money making ventures. And one of those Linux 'money making ventures' beat out Apple! It appears this distinction is too deep that neither you nor your sock-puppet good buddy AppleJack are able to grasp....:D

You're assuming I mean geek as a derisive statement, I don't. In some ways the world is ruled by geeks, Jobs and Gates would be only two.... does anyone think Warren Buffet was cool in school?

I meant geeks (those who love to play, fiddle... use your own term) with technology will use Linux as a end user OS but it's not for anyone who wants to use technology as a simple appliance/tool.

Understand?

No need to project your inadequacy onto me... find a way to feel better about yourself some other way.

Linux allows you both!
You can use it as is, or you can modify it to your heart's content.
This choice is YOURS with Linux...;)
