okay

I have this problem for a while now

I have a router - a DI-624revD

anyways the problem I have is - that it keeps disconnecting the internet every 15 minutes - when the data cable is plugged into the D-Link router.

But when I take the data cable off the D-Link router and plug it directly into the Sympatico Modem - i dont have the disconnecting problem anymore - but we have to share the internet - because more than one person uses it - two computers -

So, when its connected back to the router - it starts disconnecting the internet every 15 minutes or so again -

I've tried to ask D-Link Tech support - they made me http://192.168.2.1/

then it gave me the page for the cable modem.

But maybe the data cable wasn't plugged into the router - when i did this - so I don't know why i didn't get the D-Link router page.

Anyways, last time i had this problem - he made me download the update

DI-624_revD

on the D-Link home page.

and then I had no problems from then on.

Anyone else have this problem? Know how i can fix it?

its annoying having your internet disconnected every ten minutes - when you're playing an online game ..

My question is - if I do have to update it - then how do i go about updating my router - go onto the page - download the D1624RevD update and then what? After the update patch is on my desktop?

Ah the D-Link 624...infamous for disconnects, just check here http://www.dslreports.com/forum/dlink

D-Link router configuration page is usually http://192.168.0.1/
Login as "admin" no password, if your first time.

My DLink 624-C never worked right for 2 years, no matter what firmware came out. I ended up feeding the 624 from a switch, just so my wired connections would not drop.

However the last firmware for the 624-C has worked great, but only after I followed the Crash Recovery Process for updating the firmware.

Step 1) Factory reset - power up, push and hold reset button for 12 seconds.
Step 2) Unplug 624 power connector, push and hold reset button, then reconnect power while holding reset. Continue to hold reset for 30 seconds as it powers up.
Step 3) open browser go to http://192.168.0.1/ You should now see a new page, Crash Recovery Page, where you will browse for firmware file you dowloaded and update the firmware.
Step 4) After 624 reboots from new firmware install, perform Step 1 again to reset to factory defaults.

After that it's back to http://192.168.0.1/ . First order of business, go to the Tools tab, and enter a password. Click Apply. Now other users cannot get in and mess you up.

Next, if you are not using Wireless, go to Wireless section and Disable Wireless Radio and click apply.
If you are using Wireless, then setup wireless security. But that's a whole other question :)

There is a tool on DSLReports, the D-Link Connection Monitor, that is very handy for monitoring disconnects.

Had one at work, same problem. Got a Linksys instead, about $50 - not worth wasting time over

The D-Link 624C have/had a problem with a defective 5V power supply. Often the supplies burn out and output 9V. After this, the units will only work for about 15 minutes (often less) before rebooting. All power supplies on the D-Link units will eventually die, some after over 1 year, some more quickly than that. I have changed out a large pile of hardware on this problem.

*** Important: Do not purchase a new D-Link and reuse the old supply. The new unit will be destroyed and malfunction too. ***

I just purchase Linksys now ...

My history is:

1. I purchased a number of the early Linksys wireless networking products. These were my first "inexpensive" wireless networking products. The Linksys units had a problem with the hardware radio that caused the wireless to stop funcitoning. After a while (>1 year), all units needed to be replaced.

2. I purchased a number of D-Link units. The early models required software updates and worked fine. A number made it to the 3 year mark.

3. I purchased a number of D-Link units with defective power supplies (to replace #2). These all died. Many in just a few months. Only one lasted 2 years.

4. Linksys was purchased by Cisco. Price and quality both increase. I purchase some Linksys products, and like them.

5. I purchase a slew of Linksys products. None has died yet.

Most days, I think that the hardware manufacturers aim to have 95%+ of their hardware survive the 1 year warrantee period. After that, I don't think the vendors care ...

When you replaced the dlink with a linksys. Was it a lengthy, tedious, drawn out process of reestablishing all the numbers in the settings, that took hours, a whole day of tech support phone calls?

Cause maybe...I'll just get a linksys too.

May I ask whay model linksys you're using? So I don't have to look through the many different models. I'll just ask for your particular model.

Why do they keep having the firmware updated?

It should only take a few minutes to set up a new Linksys router. Unlike the older D-Links, you don't need to reflash the firmware to get the router to work with Bell Sympatico.

I typicallly purchase the WRT-54GL which can be reprogrammed with third party firmware to add extra functionality. If you simply want to connect to Bell, Rogers, or Cogeco, get the WRT-54G. They are readily available and inexpensive.

Hello, the only things you will need from your old setup are the PPPoE username/password (if running DSL) and the WPA/WEP wireless key. You should be up and running in a few minutes.

I too use the Linksys WRT54GL ($80):
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/searchtools/item-Details.asp?EdpNo=1820385&sku=L48-2468

The GL models are specially setup to use 3rd party software that allow you do special things like boost power (from 80mW to 280mW). I use DD-WRT software in mine.

A standard WRT54G goes for $70:

http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0926INGFS10025695&catid=21119
They also could be loaded with a smaller version of 3rd party software

Fixes come out all the time for various issues, hence a new software load. If you are interested in 3rd party software, see:

I have a Motorola Cable Modem through Rogers and has worked great for over a year now. However in the last month or so I have been experiencing internet disconnects many times when logged on. It occurs so often that I am always ready just to right click my Network Connections and click on repair.

I do not know if this is the result of changes by Rogers or all of the recent changes to my system by Microsoft.

We had the exact same problem here where I live.
We used to be with Bell and there was a lot of disconnecting and bandwith drops. We then decided to go to Rogers and since it's really heaven.

Now the fact that you can access the modem's homepage means that it is configured as router. You should try to disable the router functiun of the modem to leave it to your actual router - OR - you can leave your modem as the router and put your router as a simple switch.

Hello, try taking the ethernet cable out of the cable modem for a few seconds and re-inserting it. If that fixes it, then I think it's an IP address problem (not getting a dhcp address).

Are you running a firewall like Zone Alarm?

I use Kerio Personal Firewall, which I have used well before this issue started up.

I will give the cable thing a try, thanks
