Internet Explorer and the Spyware Problem

The best way to improve security on a windows computer is to use neither explorer or outlook.

I recommend www.mozilla.org for the browser.

I'm using Mozilla- great browser. Some people prefer Opera, as well (www.opera.com)

Either one is a good alternative to IE.

I prefer Opera, been using it a few years now. Also use Mozilla once in awhile, which runs and looks much like Netscape. Rarely use IE any more. I never get any pop-ups with Opera or Mozilla.

Never used Outlook either.

Apparently the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Computer Emergency Readiness Team (CERT) have issued recommendations to switch from IE to an alternative browser such as Mozilla or Opera.

You don't need to get rid of IE to use an alternate browser. I still use IE for online banking, and occasionally for printing web-content.

Your security gain is greatest when you are surfing 'questionable' web sites, anyway.

The big problem with using alternate browers is that many sites (and TERB is a prime example of it) set their website up to run under IE and damn anyone who uses any other browsers - they simply aren't supported. I raised this issue when TERB did it's last upgrade which effectively blocked me out with Netscape, and I got a very ho-hum response from the powers that be here. Basically it was "use IE" Until that attiude changes (not just here but at other sites too) IE will continue to have a stranglehold on the market.

Been using the various free versions the last few years. Using version 7.23 right now haven't upgraded to the newer free version yet. Basically I like the speed of Opera and think it's the fastest browser out. Also use Mozilla and rarely use IE or Netscape anymore. Have had these 4 browsers on my PC for years to experiment with their use and have had no problems as a result. Opera has a few other neat features lacking on other browsers and that little ad banner at the top is no big deal, since both IE and Netscape have far more ads on their browsers homepage.

You don't have to get rid of IE just download another browser and use it instead of IE.

Not so, TERB runs fine with Opera, I'm using it right now, with Opera and Mozilla browsers and it is supported well. Granted IE opens up most websites and this is the reason I still use it on the rare time I can't get in with either Opera, Mozilla or Netscape, but of late these times are pretty rare.

The problem you ran into had more to do with using an older browser (Netscape 4.76) than using a non-IE browser. Using a four year old update to a six year old browser in this world is like trying to use a quill pen as a laser printer. You won't have a problem with the latest version of Mozilla or Netscape (which is based on Mozilla).

I use Firefox Version .9 (soon to go live with V1.0) and have very few problems with web sites that are tuned to IE.

I use NN6.0 almost all the time. (Except when cleaning out my hotmail accounts). And I have absolutely no problems using TERB. In fact, it's far better on NN than with my old IE 4.0 standard browser.

If you use IE 4.0 upgrade to IE 6.0 it's better and faster. However I use Opera most of the time, which is faster still than either IE. I stopped using NN 6.0 had a few conflicts when using it but I hear NN 7.0 is better just haven't given it a try yet.
