Just wanted to post a quick fix for anyone who was trying to install the Internet Explorer 7 update from MS update site using an illegal version of Windows XP (and can't get past the validate screen).
First of all, make sure you install the patch for the Windows Genuine Advantage (the WGA warning is not flashing in the task tray). If it is, instructions can be found here to get rid of it:

When you start the update, and the install window for Internet Explorer 7 opens (after it has downloaded from MS's site), disconnect from the internet, go to the folder:
c:\documents and settings\all users\application data\windows genuine advantage\data
and delete the file "data.dat", then go back to the IE7 install window & click the validate button , and continue on with your install. Reconnect after you reboot!
Worked like a charm for me!!!
