I have an extreamly painful ingrown toenail, I'm looking for advice on treatment. A friend of mine mentioned that I may need to have my toenail removed by a Podiatrist.
If I have to have it removed, how long does it take to make an appointment with a Podiatrist? I don't know how long I can handle this agony, I really don't want to wait four to six weeks.
If the nail's early in the ingrowing stages, I slip a scrap of paper—coated glossy photo is best—under the nail at the spot to encourage it to grow up and over instead of into the skin. After a couple of days (you do have to renew the paper) the nail's usually grown long enough that it's no longer a problem.
Seek medical attention (podiatrist) as if it gets infected you're worse off , and potentially in a dangerous situation.
A Podiatrist would be available on a day or 2 days notice, especially if you explain your situation
Part of the fee is covered by ohip, but they would explain that to you when you call for the appointment.

Been there. Basically, they will freeze the toe. Cut out the ingrown part down to the base of the toe. Use acid to kill the root. You will not lose your whole toe nail, just the ingrown part and side all the way down.
You've let this go too far. Get thee to a podiatrist or chiropodist now. There is nothing you can do on your own.
Yup, you're infected Rocketman. For pain relief, painkillers might help a bit but not a lot. The ice will help stop the throbbing etc and it will not do anything adverse to the nail.
Just remember not to put ice or a cold pack directly on the skin because you can damage the outer skin layers.
And get to a podiatrist, chiropodist or even to emergency to get it taken care of. The longer you wait the worse it will be.
for immediate relief soak foot in warm water for 15-20 min, squeeze out the puss, than put some iodine on it to prevent further infection, than get to doctor. http://familydoctor.org/208.xml
For the life of me I can't figure out why people come HERE for medical advice? I mean really, why not just go to the friggen doctor and get it taken care of?
IF you let something like this slide TOO long you could lose your toe....
I know guys are very typically gunshy when it comes to seeing the doc's but sheesh.....

Doctor's offices aren't open on weekends, and I am in fear that I am going to have to make an appointment with a specialist. I am posting becasue I want to know how long I will have to wait for a specialist, and to find out if it is covered by ohip.
I can see that others have gone to their family doctor to have their toenail removed. I have found this post helpful, and I am sorry to have offended you TBoy.
If you have the operation done in the hospital they will do it for free, but they remove the whole toenail. It takes a few months for the toenail to grow back. When I had this type of operation, the damn doctor did not wait until the anesthetic was working and basically injected me with the needle and started to remove the toenail right away….I felt like ripping his damn head off right there and then!! LMAO
The first time I had this operation I went to a Podiatrist (Highly friggin’ recommended). The Podiatrist did not remove the whole toenail, he trimmed the side of the nail with a special tool and scissors, he also gave me a anesthetic, but he was kind enough to wait 15 – 20 minutes before operating on my toe. I barely felt anything, and when the bandages came off, you could barely tell that there was an operation performed…unless you moved the skin on the side of the nail to show the trimmed side. I had the operation done about a year and a half a go and it was not covered by my plan…but who gives a rats ass!! My toe was sore, it was bleeding and pus was everywhere!! FUCK IT !! GO TO A PODIATRIST!!! LOL
